The salary range for this position takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.
At WGU, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their position, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is:

Job Description
The Visiting Instructor provides specialized instruction for courses focusing on concepts for students. Student learning is the primary responsibility of WGU faculty. Visiting Instructors are subject matter experts who teach and support students. Visiting Instructors offer specialized instruction on topics in their course(s) aligned with best practices, as well as monitor and support student progress in competency development. They are responsive to learner needs and vary the type, length, method, and intensity of instruction best matched to the learner’s strengths and goals. Using technology, Visiting Instructors may interact with students in both group and one-on-one settings. Instructors collaborate with other instructional and program faculty serving the students to ensure continuity and quality of support.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Provide specialized instruction on assigned topics aligned with course curriculum and best practices.
- Monitor the course progress of an assigned group of learners in their course(s) and proactively offer support at key points of the student journey.
- Provide expertise in assigned content area and maintains current knowledge in their field.
- Foster student learning through innovative, effective teaching practices.
- Use technology-based teaching and communication platforms to aid students in the development of competencies.
- Collaborate with other professionals within the university to promote a positive, student-obsessed atmosphere.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to customize instructional support for learners with a variety of needs and educational backgrounds
- Must demonstrate technological competency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (or similar) applications, virtual instructional platforms, and student management systems
- Extraordinary customer service orientation
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to present information clearly, concisely, and accurately; friendly, persuasive speaking and writing style
- Communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds and situations
- Well organized - conscientious and detail-oriented
- Adapt to changing priorities within the workplace
- Demonstrate initiative through independent completion of tasks
- Ability to use data to make decisions
- Strong understanding, acceptance, adherence, and promotion of the tenets of competency-based education in the WGU model
Job Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master of Social Work (MSW) must be from an accredited institution. Education is verified
- Minimum of 2 years industry experience
- Minimum of 2 years providing student support and instruction
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctorate of Social Work, or terminal degree in Social Work. Education must be from an accredited institution. Education is verified
- Experience with distance education and distance learning students is preferred
- Oversaw CSWE accreditation from program inception to full approval.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Works primarily from home within the continental United States and is available to travel to meetings as required.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
Position & Application Details
Part-time Regular Positions (classified as regular and working less than 30 standard weekly hours): This is a part-time, regular position (classified for less than 30 SWH) that is eligible for vision and mental healthcare; flexible spending account; voluntary life insurance; accident, critical illness and hospital indemnity supplemental coverages; legal and identity theft coverage; retirement savings plan; wellbeing program; discounted WGU tuition; and prorated paid holidays and accrued sick time.
