Job description

The Department of Music at Davidson College seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor/Instructor for a temporary, one-year appointment that begins July 1, 2025. We seek a collaborative pianist with a minimum of a master's degree in collaborative piano, piano performance, or related degree as appropriate. (Those with a master's degree will be hired at the Visiting Instructor level, and those with a doctoral degree will be hired at the Visiting Assistant Professor level.) Previous experience in accompanying choirs, student vocalists, and student instrumentalists is required. We seek a candidate with fastidious attention to their partners, self-awareness, and a familiarity with a wide range of repertoire. While not required, candidates who also are proficient on organ are encouraged to include this in their applications. Applicants must be dedicated to creating equitable and inclusive learning environments within our undergraduate, liberal arts curriculum.

This position will serve as the accompanist for Choral Arts Society Davidson, Chorale, Scholar's Recital, Concerto Competition, Voice Performance Hour, voice and instrumental studio recitals, select juries, and senior recitals. Classes for the 2025-26 academic year begin Monday, August 25, 2025. Choral Arts Society Davidson rehearses Mondays 6:30-8:30 p.m., and Chorale rehearses Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays 4:30-6:00 p.m. Voice Performance Hour is a masterclass style class held on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30. Each choir participates in 2-4 on-campus performances each semester, and Chorale may go on tour 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the spring 2026 semester (Tuesday, January 20). The accompanist may be asked to run choir sectionals 1-2 times per term. The Scholar's Recital takes place in late September or early October, and the Concerto Competition takes place in mid- or late October. Juries take place at the end of each semester. Chorale sings in the college's Baccalaureate Service (Saturday, May 16, 2026) and Commencement (Sunday, May 17, 2026). The candidate is expected to be available for independent, self-scheduled coaching hours for approximately 10 hours per week.

This full-time faculty appointment comes with a competitive salary and generous benefits. Davidson faculty members enjoy a low faculty-student ratio, emphasis on and appreciation of inclusive pedagogies, outstanding facilities and support resources, and access to public lectures, performances and exhibits, and NCAA Division I athletic events. We uphold a collegial culture that honors academic achievement and integrity across the liberal arts, upholds inclusive excellence, and encourages student-faculty collaboration on research and creative works. Davidson College is an ideal workplace for those interested in interdisciplinary collaboration, building community, developing innovative pedagogical practices, and mentoring undergraduate students.

Applications must be submitted online at https://employment.davidson.edu. Applications must include a curriculum vitae and list of at least 3 links to video/audio of accompaniment/collaboration with a solo singer, solo instrumentalist, chamber ensemble, and/or choral ensemble.

Applications completed by March 14, 2025 will receive priority consideration.
