Job description

Position Summary

The Theatre and Dance Department of Indiana University South Bend is seeking an Assistant Professor of Theatre, Lighting and Sound Design to begin August 1, 2025.

The Department, housed in the vibrant Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts a part of the College of Arts and Sciences, is a professionally engaged community of theatre makers with the goal of helping each of our students find and evolve their most trained, flexible, creative, and unique artist within while preparing them for further study in graduate school and/or work in the professional theatre world.

The Department offers a BA in Theatre and BFA programs in Musical Theatre Performance and Design & Technical Production. The Theatre and Dance Department produces 2-4 productions per academic year including our children's theatre series, which has been a beloved tradition in the region for nearly 60 years.

Faculty Responsibility Summary:
  • Teaching courses within specialty (lighting and sound design/technology) as well as campus and department-serving general education courses; this may include Introduction to Theatre, Design survey courses, and Script Analysis as well as others determined by need and specialty.
  • Designing and implementing lighting and sound for all Department of Theatre and Dance productions. That will include mentoring student designers on production work in the areas of Lighting and Sound. (1 course release per semester for production work).
  • Engaging in continued professional research and/or creative work. (Typically, one course reassigned time per semester for scholarly and creative activities following campus policies).
  • Engaging in service activities, including participation in faculty governance and department recruitment efforts.

Basic Qualifications

Required Basic Qualifications
  • MFA in Theatre in Design or closely related field.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • General computer skills and proficiency in Vectorworks, Q Lab, and other specialty-specific applications.
  • Proficiency working with a range of traditional, LED and moving lighting instruments, light boards, sound boards and sound systems.
  • Professional design experience.


Preferred Basic Qualifications
  • Experience teaching at the University level.
  • Experience in Projection Design.
  • Experience working with specific technology, such as the Mackie Pro FX16v3, PreSonus Studio Live 24, Shure Wireless mic systems, ETC Ion Xe 20 light board, ETC Gadget II, Mackie 1402-VLZ3, ETC Element, and the Meyer Constellation system.
