Job description

The Department of Geosciences at Indiana University Northwest invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Geology. The position is a full-time, 10-month, visiting position. Summer assignments and associated stipend are possible in accordance with programmatic need.

We seek candidates with demonstrated commitment to success of diverse student populations, the ability to implement sound and modern pedagogy for both face-to face and online instruction, and a commitment to undergraduate student engagement. The area of expertise is open and faculty with research focused on aspects of geoscience education, as well as more traditional lines of disciplinary research are encouraged to apply.

Teaching responsibilities will include courses in the successful candidate’s area of expertise, an upper-level undergraduate course in sedimentology and stratigraphy, and introductory and early-career courses in earth science, geology, or geography based on departmental needs. The department offers B.S. and B.A. degrees in geology, an interdepartmental major in environmental science, and an online B.A. degree in sustainability, shared among five IU regional campuses. Additionally, the department contributes to programs in science education and a master’s program in liberal studies.

Core responsibilities include a 12-hour per semester teaching load each semester in face-to-face or asynchronous online modalities. Should there be an opportunity for this position to transition to permanent tenure-track, the successful candidate would obtain a one-course equivalent teaching reduction each semester, conduct disciplinary research and publish, and actively engage in service to the department, campus, discipline, and the community.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Geology or closely related field by August 1, 2025
  • Demonstrated ability to teach introductory/early career courses in earth science, geology, or geography, and majors’ courses based on candidate expertise and departmental needs
  • Demonstrated interest in involving undergraduate students in high impact activities that engage and prepare students for advancement
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate modern technologies in teaching and research
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially with students, fellow faculty, and staff
  • Willingness to utilize sound pedagogies and high impact practices in teaching, student research, and in other student engagement activities, to promote success, and to broaden participation in the geosciences
  • Flexibility and willingness to teach courses based on departmental need

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability establishing a successful research program involving undergraduate students and publishing research.
  • Willingness to assist the department and campus in its ability to reach additional strategic goals, as specified in IUN's strategic plan.
