Job Description:

The Department of Art and Art History at Trinity University invites applicants for a full-time, one-year, non-renewable Visiting Assistant Professor of Drawing & Painting position, beginning August 11, 2025.

We seek applicants whose expertise in painting and drawing is grounded in studio practice, scholarship, and teaching. Applicants should have an active exhibition record and fluency in drawing and painting. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach a strong foundation in perceptual, formal, and critical skills within a liberal arts context and to engage students in contemporary issues and the conceptual dimension of artmaking. Applicants who bring an interdisciplinary perspective to their studio practice and teaching are encouraged to apply, as are applicants whose work engages the expanded field of drawing and painting and its links to other studio disciplines. The Visiting Assistant Professor of Drawing & Painting will teach three courses per semester.

This position is not eligible for employment Visa sponsorship.

BACKGROUND

The Department of Art and Art History at Trinity University is a vibrant department with five tenured faculty in studio art and five tenured faculty in art history. The department has strong connections with several other departments and interdisciplinary programs on campus, including Classical Studies, Communication, Education, History, Human Communication and Theater, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Modern Languages and Literature, and Urban Studies. We encourage our students to pursue undergraduate research, often in collaboration with faculty, and have been active participants in our university’s summer undergraduate research program. In addition, the Department of Art and Art history is housed in a state of the art facility completed in 2006, which includes the Michael & Noémi Neidorff Art Gallery.

Duties And Responsibilities

The position carries a maximum of a 3/3 course load

  • Contribute to the maintenance and development of the drawing and painting teaching studios and workspaces
  • Contribute to the development, planning and implementation of a high-quality curriculum in introductory through advanced courses
  • Commit to continuing professional development
  • Participate in departmental business and service when appropriate

EDUCATION

Required: MFA in painting or related fields.

Experience

Required:

  • The ideal candidate will have at least 1 year undergraduate teaching experience. (May include a 1 year teaching assistantship in which the candidate is the primary instructor.)
  • Demonstrated record of professional achievement commensurate with years of training, experience, and studio practice.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Expertise in perceptual and contemporary practices in drawing and painting
  • In-depth knowledge of art historical and contemporary issues related to the expanded field of drawing and painting practices.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work in drawing and painting studio settings around wet and dry art materials; including acrylic and oil paint, mediums and solvents.

ATTENDANCE

Maintaining and satisfying minimum attendance requirements is an essential part of this position. All employees in this job classification are required to satisfy this requirement. This includes a four day teaching week with onsite attendance required.
