Overview

This full‑time Visiting Academic Professional position, located in Champaign, IL, coordinates the flow of information between the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the various ISAS field stations regarding archaeological survey requests. The role facilitates the workflow for IDOT statewide survey projects from receipt of the Environmental Survey Request (ESR) to completion and submittal of the Archaeological Survey Short Report (ASSR) and the Archaeological Testing Survey Report (ATSR). Coordination with the ISAS Data Management Team ensures that the ISAS Project Database and related project files remain up to date and compliant with standing agreements.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate the flow of work for IDOT statewide survey projects from ESR receipt to ASSR and ATSR submission.
• Coordinate with ISAS Data Management leadership to maintain and update the ISAS Project Database for statewide survey projects.
• Evaluate and post survey requests, completed ASSRs, ATSRs, and SHPO reviews on the Project Notification System (PNS).
• Ensure compliance with standing agreements and update lists of Programmatic Agreements and Memorandums of Agreement on the ISAS website.
• Prepare and distribute reports on the status of outstanding projects as needed.
• Maintain ASSR and ATSR files, both digital and paper.
• Assist in the production and submission of reports.
• Contribute to the production of the annual report of ISAS projects and activities.
• Engage in field projects as necessary and participate in public outreach highlighting ISAS activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Anthropology or a closely related field (concentration in archaeology preferred).
• Minimum of two years of experience carrying out Phase I and II archaeological field projects in a Midwestern context.
• Minimum of one year of Phase I field supervisory experience, including directing field projects, authorship of ASSRs, and use of GPS and geophysical survey methods.
• Proficiency with basic word processing, graphics, GIS, and database programs.
• Minimum six months experience with Illinois archaeological and transportation databases such as the Archaeological Projects Database, IDOT PNS, State of Illinois SharePoint, and the Cultural Resources Management Database and Archive.
• Basic knowledge of Midwest archaeological culture history and historic preservation laws and procedures (Historic Preservation Act, Section 106, and State of Illinois laws).
• Strong writing and editorial background with effective personal communication, relational, organizational, and leadership skills.
• Attention to detail and ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast‑paced work environment with multiple changing priorities.

Additional Information

This is a full‑time Visiting Academic Professional position that may become a non‑visiting appointment in the future, contingent on survey needs and available funding. Salary is negotiable based on experience. The proposed starting date is as soon as possible after the closing date.
