Job summary

The Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois invites applications for an Assistant Research Scientist, Archaeology with the Illinois State Archaeological Survey. The position focuses on analyzing archaeological materials and coordinating reporting for compliance with state and federal regulations. Minimum qualifications include a Master’s in anthropology/archaeology with at least 3 years in CRM/government archaeology; a Ph.D.

is preferred. A valid driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

• Master's in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related discipline; at least 3 years of professional experience in CRM, academic, or government archaeology environments.
• Meets the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for archaeology (36 CFR Part 61).
• Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Analyze and interpret archaeological materials recovered during compliance projects.
• Develop and implement question-based research designs.
• Review and edit archaeological reports; coordinate reporting with section heads and coordinators.
• Coordinate projects across multiple staff and sections; provide technical expertise to agencies and the public.
• Contribute to research output through grant applications, publications, and presentations.
