Job summary

Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community seeks a Director of Hocokata Ti to provide visionary leadership for the cultural center, shaping a long-term strategy that preserves and promotes Dakota culture for current and future generations.

The role includes developing innovative programs, partnerships, and learning experiences, while ensuring an exceptional visitor experience and strong organizational performance. Collaboration with schools, researchers, and community members is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Museum studies, Native American Studies, History, Education, Cultural Resource Management or related field.
• Knowledge of Dakota history, culture traditions, and values required.
• 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in cultural center, educational institution, tribal government, or related environment.
• 7+ years of leadership experience leading teams, budgets, programs and strategic initiatives.
• Experience overseeing exhibits, collections, educational and cultural programs, and visitor experiences.
• Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
• Strong public speaking, presentation, and facilitation skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute a long-term strategic vision for Hocokata Ti that advances the preservation, promotion, and understanding of Dakota culture, history, language, and traditions.
• Oversee exhibits, collections, educational programs, and visitor experiences to ensure high-quality experiences.
• Lead programs and partnerships that engage community, students, educators, researchers, and visitors.
• Direct all operational, administrative, and programmatic functions to ensure sustainable operations.
• Collaborate with partners to promote Hocokata Ti’s offerings and expand visibility and impact.
• Provide leadership and mentorship to staff and volunteers; support succession planning.
