Vision Rehab Therapist/Orientation & Mobility Specialist

Location: Islandia, NY

Pay Range: $83,000 - $87,000 per year. Actual pay based on skills and experience.

About Helen Keller Services

Since 1893, HKS has been dedicated to empowering individuals who are blind, visually impaired, or have combined hearing and vision loss, serving the NYC/Long Island area and beyond through various facilities and programs.

Role Overview

The VRT/OMS provides instruction to support independent travel and living skills for individuals with visual impairments. Works as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver tailored services.

Responsibilities
  1. Assess clients' needs and abilities for independent living and travel.
  2. Document evaluations and progress, and prepare reports.
  3. Develop individualized VRT and O&M plans.
  4. Coordinate and schedule client instruction sessions.
  5. Collaborate with staff and external organizations.
  6. Provide consultation, public education, and in-service training.
  7. Deliver O&M instruction, including body image, spatial concepts, motor and sensory development, and techniques such as cane travel, street crossing, and public transportation use.
  8. Provide VRT instruction covering self-care, household management, communication, food prep, organizational skills, financial management, pre-occupational skills, leisure, and adaptive device training.
Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Orientation & Mobility and Vision Rehabilitation Therapy, or Bachelor’s degree with successful completion of CBVH-approved program.
  • ACVREP dual certification preferred.
