Job summary

NYU Grossman School of Medicine, part of NYU Langone Health System, seeks Sleep Technologist candidates to support sleep studies in the center. You will gather patient data, explain procedures, and ensure proper calibration and electrode placement for accurate PSG results.

The role requires NYS license/registration and at least 2 years of polysomnography experience; CPR/BCLS certification is essential. Strong communication and patient‑facing skills are expected.

Qualifications

• Must hold NYS OP License and current Polysomnographic Technologist registration or Registration as an RT/RTT competent to perform polysomnographic services; 2 years’ experience.

Responsibilities

• Gather and analyze patient information; explain procedures and orient patients to the sleep center.
• Prepare and calibrate equipment; apply electrodes and sensors per standards; fit PAP masks.
• Perform polysomnographic procedures and monitor study quality to ensure artifact‑free signals.
• Document observations and interventions to assist scoring and interpretation of results.
• Assist with scoring sleep/wake stages and generation of clinical reports.
• Maintain safety, infection control, and data integrity; respond to inquiries from study participants.

Job description

Job Responsibilities

• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Gather and analyze patient information – review history, physical information, medications, procedure request, and study protocol; complete and verify documentation; explain the procedure and orient the patient to the sleep center.
• Testing preparation procedures – prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing; apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards; perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals; perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.
• Polysomnographic procedures – follow procedural protocols such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc.; follow lights‑out procedures to establish and document baseline values; acquire polysomnographic data while monitoring study‑tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact‑free and make adjustments if necessary.
• Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results; implement appropriate interventions for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi‑level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.
• Follow lights‑on procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process; demonstrate knowledge and skills to recognize and provide age‑specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Assist with scoring sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines; assist with scoring clinical events such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.; assist with the generation of accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
• Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control; perform routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation; maintain current CPR or BCLS certification; demonstrate effective written and spoken communication skills, appropriate social skills, and ability to follow direction; respond to study participants' procedural‑related inquiries by providing appropriate information.

Additional Position Specific Responsibilities

Inspect and maintain sleep study related equipment and inventory.

Explain the procedure and orient the patient for either in‑center or home sleep apnea testing.

Perform patient education and instruction appropriate for home sleep apnea testing.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must have a NYS OP License and current registration as a Polysomnographic Technologist, or Registered Respiratory Therapist, or Respiratory Therapy Technician competent to perform Polysomnographic Technology services; 2 years’ experience in Polysomnography or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to a certificate or associate degree with an emphasis in sleep technology, or successful completion of a sleep technology program associated with a state‑licensed and/or nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency for all competencies required of a sleep technician.
• Certification by a nationally recognized certification board holding either the Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), or Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential.

Salary Range

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York State Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for this role is $40.47 - $48.00 hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses, incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
