Job summary

Sundt is seeking a Virtual Construction Pipe Designer II to independently develop complex 3D piping models and detailed fabrication drawings that support construction execution. You will collaborate with VDC Coordinators, project management, engineering, and field teams to improve constructability and digital deliverables from design to installation.

Role emphasizes advancing VDC workflows, providing guidance to junior designers, and ensuring model quality to enable efficient project execution

Qualifications

• 4–8 years of piping design or VDC experience.
• Ability to interpret drawings, P&IDs and vendor docs.
• Proficient in Plant 3D, Revit and AutoCAD.
• Associate degree or technical certificate required.

Responsibilities

• Develop and improve VDC modeling standards and workflows.
• Coordinate with VDC Coordinators to implement clash resolutions.
• Ensure fabrication models reflect constructability and sequencing.
• Identify opportunities to improve modeling efficiency via automation.
• Develop detailed 3D piping models from drawings and vendor data.
• Interpret engineering documents and resolve modeling challenges with minimal supervision.
• Participate in constructability reviews with project teams.
• Produce fabrication, spool, and installation drawings for field/shop use.
• Provide technical guidance to Level 1 Pipe Designers.
• Review drawings/models for accuracy and compliance with standards.
• Support field operations by incorporating RFIs and revisions.

Job Summary

The Virtual Construction Pipe Designer II is responsible for independently developing complex 3D piping models and producing detailed fabrication, installation, and submittal drawings that support construction execution. This role plays an active part in the project's overall Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) process by collaborating with VDC Coordinators, project management, engineering, and field teams to improve constructability, model quality, and fabrication readiness. In addition to delivering high-quality modeling and detailing, the Pipe Designer II serves as a technical resource, contributes to continuous improvement of VDC workflows and standards, and helps ensure digital deliverables support efficient project execution from design through installation.

Key Responsibilities:

• 1.Assist in developing and improving VDC modeling standards, detailing practices, and workflows.
• 2.Coordinate directly with VDC Coordinators to implement clash resolution decisions and maintain coordinated project models.
• 3.Ensure fabrication models accurately reflect constructability, installation sequencing, and project requirements.
• 4.Identify opportunities to improve modeling efficiency through automation, templates, and standardized workflows.
• 5.Independently develop detailed 3D piping models from engineering drawings, specifications, and vendor information.
• 6.Interpret complex engineering documents and resolve modeling challenges with minimal supervision.
• 7.Participate in constructability reviews and collaborate with project management, engineering, and field personnel to improve project execution.
• 8.Perform advanced material quantity reporting and support procurement and fabrication planning.
• 9.Produce fabrication drawings, spool drawings, installation drawings, and comprehensive submittal packages suitable for field and shop use.
• 10.Provide technical guidance and mentoring to Level 1 Pipe Designers.
• 11.Review fabrication drawings and models for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company standards.
• 12.Support field operations by incorporating RFls, design revisions, and as-built information into project models.

Minimum Job Requirements:

• 1.4-8 years of experience in piping design, fabrication detailing, or VDC.
• 2.Ability to interpret engineering specifications, P&IDs, and vendor documentation.
• 3.Advanced proficiency with Autodesk Plant 3D, Revit, and Autocad or similar software.
• 4.Associate degree, technical certificate, or equivalent industry experience.
• 5.Experience producing fabrication-level drawings for industrial or water infrastructure projects.
• 6.Strong understanding of construction methods, fabrication practices, and piping systems.
