Listing Summary

Design and deliver municipal and private water, sanitary, and stormwater projects alongside our Senior Wastewater Program Manager, in a practice we are actively growing. Hiring at the Engineer (EIT) or Senior Engineer (PE) level.

About this role

Racey Engineering is expanding its water and wastewater practice and is hiring a Water / Wastewater Engineer to design and deliver municipal and private water, sanitary, and stormwater projects. You will work alongside our Senior Wastewater Program Manager on a growing portfolio, owning the design and delivery of your own assignments and contributing to the practice and its client base across Virginia.

We hire at two levels. Engineers join as EITs working toward a Virginia PE, with a defined path and a pay step when licensed. Engineers' work is reviewed and sealed by our licensed engineers while they build toward their own license. Senior Engineers hold the PE and serve as Engineer of Record on their own assignments.

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead planning and design of water distribution and transmission systems, sanitary sewer collection, pump stations, force mains, and stormwater conveyance.
  • Perform hydraulic modeling in WaterCAD, SewerCAD, or equivalent.
  • Prepare preliminary engineering reports, master plans, capacity analyses, and condition assessments.
  • Develop plans, specifications, and cost estimates for competitive bid or negotiated construction.
  • Support treatment plant projects - process evaluation, upgrades, and hydraulic profile analysis - coordinating with process specialists as needed.
  • Serve as Racey's primary technical contact for assigned water and wastewater clients, and coordinate with municipal utilities and public service authorities.
  • Prepare and submit permit applications through VDEQ (VPDES, VWPP, VPA), VDH Waterworks, and USACE.
  • Own project scope, schedule, and fee budget; prepare proposals and scope amendments.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, and RFIs during construction, and support startup, testing, and commissioning.
  • Establish design standards and QA/QC procedures, mentor engineers and EITs, and represent Racey at industry conferences and tradeshows (Senior Engineer).
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
  • 3 or more years of water and wastewater design experience in consulting, utility, or regulatory work.
  • EIT certification, with a plan to earn your Virginia PE within 24 months. We support exam preparation.
  • Hands-on experience with hydraulic modeling and plan production for water or wastewater projects.
  • Working knowledge of AWWA, ASCE, NSF, and Ten States Standards, plus VA DEQ and VDH requirements.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Senior Engineer (PE)(all of the above, plus)

  • 7 or more years of water and wastewater engineering experience.
  • Virginia PE license, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months by comity.
  • Experience as Engineer of Record on water or wastewater projects, including pump stations or treatment facility upgrades.
  • Track record of managing scope, schedule, and design fee on your own assignments.
  • Working relationships with Virginia municipal utilities or public service authorities.
  • Experience mentoring and leading a technical team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Environmental or Water Resources Engineering.
  • USDA Rural Development, DEQ SLAF, and Virginia Resources Authority funded project experience.
  • SCADA, instrumentation, and controls coordination.
  • GIS (Esri) for utility asset management.
  • Familiarity with the I-81 corridor, and the Shenandoah and Roanoke Valley municipalities.
Physical Requirements, Travel, and Schedule
  • Full-time, hybrid or remote. When on-site, you work out of our Luray or Roanoke, VA office. Remote candidates must be able to travel in person for site visits, client meetings, and construction.
  • Site visits to treatment facilities, pump stations, and active construction; ability to navigate uneven terrain and confined spaces with appropriate training.
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 25 lbs.
  • Travel throughout Virginia, typically 20 to 30 percent, with occasional overnight assignments.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screening.
Compensation

Engineer (EIT): $75,000 - $90,000 per year. Senior Engineer (PE): $95,000 - $115,000 per year. Pay within each range is set by experience. Engineers are eligible to move to the Senior range on licensure and demonstrated project ownership. Signing bonus and bonus opportunities are available.
