Job Title: Village Public Safety Officer

Supervisor: VPSO Coordinator

Classification: Classified

FT/PT Status: Full Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Description

VPSOs carry out public safety and first responder duties in rural communities within the Northwest Arctic Borough. Responsibilities include enforcing laws, conducting investigations, providing emergency medical response, fire protection, search and rescue, community safety monitoring, public safety education, and community policing. Duties vary by village and are coordinated with local government entities.

Responsibilities

Under supervision of the VPSO Coordinator, VPSOs will:

  1. Enforce criminal laws.
  2. Investigate crimes, secure scenes, serve summons, transport prisoners, and respond to crimes in progress. Use of force may be necessary.
  3. Perform law enforcement duties requested by Alaska State Troopers.
  4. Provide emergency medical services and assist community health aides.
  5. Coordinate fire prevention, suppression, and education with the NAB Fire Department.
  6. Participate in search and rescue operations.
  7. Patrol community areas to ensure safety.
  8. Attend community events and council meetings.
  9. Respond to emergencies and address hazards.
  10. Assist with animal control.
  11. Complete reports in a timely manner.
  12. Supervise probation and parole activities, including testing and searches.
  13. Conduct public safety training programs.
  14. Assist with emergency response planning.
  15. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or demonstrate intent to become one.
  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Good moral character required.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Within six months of hire or prior to academy, must be certified by a physician in Alaska as fit for duty, with normal vision and hearing, and no disqualifying mental or emotional conditions.
  • No felony convictions or certain misdemeanors within specified timeframes.
  • No illegal drug manufacturing, transportation, or delivery convictions; recent controlled substance use; or marijuana use within specified periods.
  • No prior disqualifications or revocations of VPSO certification.
  • No discharges for cause from law enforcement or military service.
  • Must complete law enforcement training, rural fire certification, and EMT certification.
  • Pass FBI criminal background check and comprehensive background investigation.
  • Must submit to psychological evaluation and be free of Brady/Giglio disclosures.
  • For academy attendance, must meet physical fitness standards prior to hire.
Physical Demands

The role requires working long hours, traveling, and living in remote conditions, including exposure to adverse weather, travel by various modes, and physical exertion such as patrolling on foot. Use of force may be necessary.

Supervision

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Additional Information

The candidate must pass a background check, achieve certification within 2 years, attend training sessions, and pass a 90-day probation.
