Job description

Job Description: Firefighter/EMT Trainee

Respond to emergencies and perform duties related to fire suppression, rescue, and emergency care during ground ambulance transport. Assist with departmental training and travel to North Slope communities as needed to provide support and training. This position is a regular member of the North Slope Borough Fire Department and is authorized to act under Alaska Statute 18.70.

Note: The following duties are not exhaustive but represent major responsibilities. Incumbents may not perform all listed duties and may be assigned additional tasks.

1. Respond to emergencies, including firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical duties.
2. Travel to and work in other NSB communities to provide support and training.
3. Assist Department Instructors to ensure training courses are delivered according to lesson plans and schedules.
4. Coordinate special projects and assist with the NSB Fire Department Explorer Program as needed.
5. Maintain training skills and certifications through ongoing education and training.
6. Manage inventory and ensure equipment and supplies are ready for use.
7. Operate, clean, and inspect emergency response, firefighting, rescue, medical tools, equipment, and facilities. Keep personal certification records updated.
8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:

• Knowledge of NSB Fire Department policies, firefighting and emergency services techniques, safety, and legal issues.
• Knowledge of fire ground safety procedures and pre-hospital practices.
• Knowledge of training presentation methods.
• Ability to operate emergency response vehicles and use specialized firefighting, rescue, and medical equipment.
• Skill in planning, organizing, and scheduling training classes.
• Skill in engaging effectively with groups and presenting information clearly.
• High school diploma or G.E.D., or a combination of education and related work experience (totaling at least 12 years).
• Ability to obtain Firefighter/EMT Trainee certifications within six months of hire.
• Valid Alaska Driver’s License meeting North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
