Job summary

American University in Washington, DC is seeking a student worker to produce short-form video content supporting CAS news stories. You will report to the Assistant Director of Communications, identify compelling stories, capture footage, conduct brief interviews, and edit engaging content for Instagram, LinkedIn, and other digital channels.

You should be eligible for Federal Work Study, have experience in video editing (CapCut or Adobe Premiere), strong storytelling, and the ability to work

  • Experience creating and editing video content (coursework, internships, personal projects, social media content, or other experience).
  • Strong storytelling instincts and an eye for compelling visual content.
  • Comfortable approaching and interviewing students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to work independently while meeting deadlines.
  • Interest in social media trends and digital storytelling.
  • Familiarity with video editing software such as CapCut or Adobe Premiere.

Job Description:
Summary:

The College of Arts and Sciences’ Office of Marketing and Communications is seeking a creative student worker to produce short-form videos to accompany CAS news stories on social media. The student will report to the Assistant Director of Communications to identify compelling stories, capture video footage, conduct brief interviews, and edit engaging content for Instagram, LinkedIn, and other digital channels.

Essential Functions:
  • Create short-form video content that complements CAS news stories.
  • Film students, faculty, staff, events, classes, and research activities across campus.
  • Conduct informal on-camera interviews.
  • Use software to create and edit raw video into reels and stories for social media and web audiences.
  • Brainstorm creative ways to tell stories visually.
  • Collaborate with writers, photographers, and communications staff.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
  • Part-time.
  • 5 - 8 hours per week.
Salary Range:
  • $18.40 per hour.
Required Education and Experience:
  • Eligible for a Federal Work Study position.
  • Experience creating and editing video content (coursework, internships, personal projects, social media content, or other experience).
  • Strong storytelling instincts and an eye for compelling visual content.
  • Comfortable approaching and interviewing students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to work independently while meeting deadlines.
  • Interest in social media trends and digital storytelling.
  • Familiarity with video editing software and mobile video production tools such as Capcut, Adobe Premiere or similar.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
  • We are looking for someone who can work 5 - 8 hours a week and has some flexibility during the day to attend events and/or assist with Instagram takeovers. Editing can be done remotely. Once-a-week check-in is required in the Marketing and Communications office.
  • We're looking for a curious, creative self-starter who enjoys meeting new people and finding interesting stories across campus.
  • The ideal candidate is comfortable engaging with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of backgrounds and can help people feel at ease on camera.
  • This position offers the opportunity to build a professional portfolio while helping tell the stories of the CAS community.
  • Please note that you will use your own personal phone for videos.
