As a Qualcomm Technologies video research engineer you will be broadly working on the capturing and compression of advanced immersive volumetric data for standardization of the metaverse and other applications such as autonomous vehicles. Potential topics include compression of immersive video and dynamic 3D graphics, automotive sensor point clouds and maps, other highly complex and dynamic immersive and volumetric representations. Various new technologies are being researched such as 3D Gaussian Splats and machine learning. You will be able to participate in our group's research and contribute your work for standardization, for example by MPEG. The successful candidate for this position will be a highly self-directed individual with strong creative and analytic skills, and passionate about execution.

The team develops algorithms, hardware architectures, and systems for state-of-the-art applications of classical and machine learning methods in video compression, video processing, point cloud coding and processing, AR/VR and computer vision use cases. You will join a world-class team to help define and build what is next for mobility and the world.

We are considering candidates with various levels of experience. We are flexible on location and open to hiring anywhere; preferred locations are USA, Germany and Taiwan.

Responsibilities:

  1. Contribute to the conception, development, implementation, and optimization of new algorithms extending existing techniques and systems allowing improved immersive video and 3D graphics compression.
  2. Initiate ideas, design and implement algorithms for superior performance.
  3. Develop new algorithms for machine learning-based compression solutions.
  4. Represent Qualcomm in the related standardization forums: MPEG 3D Graphics and Video, JVET, and ITU-T/VCEG.
  5. Document and present new algorithms and implementations in various forms, including standards contributions, patent applications, conference and journal publications, presentations, etc.

Ideal candidate would have the skills/experience below:

  1. Expert knowledge of the theory, algorithms, and techniques used in 3D graphics, video and image coding, etc.
  2. Knowledge of and experience with immersive video codecs and their test models, such as VDMC, GPCC, VPCC, MIV, ECM, VVC, HEVC, AV1, etc.
  3. Experience with deep learning structures CNN, RNN, autoencoder etc. and frameworks like TensorFlow/PyTorch.
  4. Track record of successful research accomplishments demonstrated through published papers, and/or patent applications in the fields of immersive video and 3D graphics coding, video coding or video processing.
  5. Solid programming and debugging skills in C/C++, Python.
  6. Strong written and verbal English communication skills, great work ethic, and ability to work in a team environment to accomplish common goals.
  7. PhD or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or similar field, or equivalent practical experience.

Qualifications:

  1. PhD or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or similar fields.
  2. 1+ years of experience with programming languages such as C, C++, Python, MATLAB, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or related field and 6+ years of Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related work experience.

OR

Master's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or related field and 5+ years of Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related work experience.

OR

PhD in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or related field and 4+ years of Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related work experience.

Pay range and Other Compensation & Benefits:

$179,000.00 - $268,400.00

The above pay scale reflects the broad, minimum to maximum, pay scale for this job code for the location for which it has been posted. Even more importantly, please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Qualcomm. We also offer a competitive annual discretionary bonus program and opportunity for annual RSU grants (employees on sales-incentive plans are not eligible for our annual bonus).
