Job Description

Position Overview:

Reporting to the President, the Vice President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer for the Institute is responsible broadly for the financial and administrative affairs of the Institute, including accounting, budgeting, financial analysis, endowment oversight, student accounts, treasury functions, facilities management, information technology, and campus safety and security.

The Vice President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer for the Institute is expected to oversee the financial and administrative functions of the institution and staff the trustee committees responsible for investments, budgeting, and audit.

Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) was founded in 1997 as the first higher education institution in the United States dedicated exclusively to education and research related to the applied life sciences. Education And Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in Business or Accounting, preferably an MBA or CPA, or a related field, with at least eight years of experience working with high-profile professionals, making financial and strategic decisions, making independent judgments, and working with a wide diversity of people and constituencies, including progressively increasing management responsibility within not-for-profit enterprises.

The Vice President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer for the Institute must appreciate higher education culture, including shared governance. In addition to accounting, budgeting, and finance skills, the Vice President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer for the Institute should have strong organizational, analytical, writing, and interpersonal communication skills and be able to work effectively in a demanding but collegial environment.

A Master’s degree, preferably in business or a related field, is preferred.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential function of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions may be performed, with or without, reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Serve as a member of the President’s cabinet in shaping the Institution’s financial future and administrative policies, and participate in relevant Board committees, including the Audit, Finance, and Investments.
  • Oversee and manage the financial accounting and reporting, control of financial operations, financial long-range planning and budgeting, and management of assets and liabilities within prescribed policies.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and generally accepted accounting practices and rules.
  • Direct the institute's administrative and fiscal functions and policies (accounting, budget management, purchasing, facilities, IT, property management, and investments).
  • Align financial and administrative procedures with the Institute’s objectives and establish systems to ensure compliance with Institute expenditures and student needs.
  • Provide oversight of the Institute’s finances and investments to the Board of Trustees.
  • Interpret operating reports and results as they affect the Institute's financial aspects and make specific recommendations for cost reduction and/or profit improvement as needed.
  • Signs tax returns, checks, and other financial documents as required.
  • Lead and supervise Facilities and IT, including oversight of all accounting, financing of capital projects and improvements, investing Institute endowment, annual audit, and other fiscal functions.
  • Provide clear direction and oversight of all department activities in order to develop and achieve annual goals, including budgeting, planning, and staff development. Responsible for monitoring and evaluating direct reports and overall division staff performance and daily assignments.
  • Collaborate within the Claremont Consortium and represent the Institute’s interests in key areas.
  • Look for methods to improve quality, efficiency, and productivity, reduce costs, increase profits, or improve control measures.
  • Evaluation of financial advice on the impact of introducing new programs and strategies.
  • Perform other related duties as requested by the President.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential function of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions may be performed, with or without, reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Thorough knowledge of the applicable laws and administrative policies governing university finance practices and procedures and the principles and practices of not-for-profit accounting.
  • Capable of collaborating and communicating across all levels of the organization and adept at preparing and delivering presentations.
  • Extensive financial and budget management experience, preferably with some endowment accounting expertise. Exposure to higher education is a strong preference.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic financial plans that drive revenue growth.
  • Ability to conceptualize and operationalize goals and objectives for the department.
  • Proven ability to promote teamwork and collaboration within teams and with colleagues across the Institute.
  • Extensive problem-solving skills and the ability to organize and manage complex functions are required.
  • Must be skilled in using financial management software commonly used in higher education.
  • The ability to work with confidential and sensitive information and records and commit to the highest ethical standards is necessary.
  • Must interact effectively with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and external constituencies.

Hours, Classification, And Status

This is a regular, full-time, benefits-eligible, exempt position.

The regular hours of this position are Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department.

Salary range: $250,000-$270,000 annualized. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

Physical And Mental Requirements

Ability to maintain good concentration level while dealing with interruptions; attention to details with emphasis on accuracy; capable of giving, receiving, and analyzing information, formulating work plans, and articulating goals and action plans. Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. Standing for extended periods of time. Reaching and extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal parameters. Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file. Ability to move about. Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs., for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages.

Ability to drive locally, depending on business needs. Occasionally, will be required to stand for prolonged periods of time at activities/events on and off-campus.
