Vice President of Design and Engineering – Role Overview

The Vice President of Design and Engineering will provide technical and engineering leadership for both design‑build and engineering‑only projects and pursuits. The responsibilities of this position include maintaining and, where necessary, establishing standards for Austin’s design and engineering process. The purposes of these standards include ensuring a measure of consistency, defining the level of quality for deliverables, and providing efficient and effective design and engineering processes that support The Austin Method, so that projects are completed on‑time, within budget, at the highest quality levels and meet client satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the design and engineering team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation. Hold the team accountable for their individual duties and responsibilities.
  • Develop the vision for engineering success and own the outcome of the overall engineering strategy.
  • Work with Directors of Engineering to assign resources to project teams. These resources must be capable of supplying the expertise necessary for successful project performance.
  • Monitor and measure the quality of design and engineering capability and performance in all operations, ensuring that operational teams maintain client satisfaction, produce high quality service and deliverables, and produce a profit that meets or exceeds Austin’s annual plan for both dollar amount and margin.
  • Ensure distribution to projects and pursuits for all design and engineering personnel to meet established and budgeted amounts.
  • Maintain and develop new company policies, process, and procedures in connection with the professional and technical aspects of Austin’s design and engineering function. Monitor and ensure the compliance of these policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Identify and lead the development of market‑specific engineering standards, resources, and tools to improve design production and efficiency.
  • Ensure proper architecture and engineering registration and licenses are maintained in all locations in which Austin operates.
  • Monitor Austin’s professional architecture and engineering practices to assure compliance with all laws and regulations pertaining to the professional practice of architecture and engineering in all locations where Austin is active.
  • Investigate significant design errors and implement actions and programs to avoid their repetition as well as to generally reduce engineering overhead costs.
  • Periodically review representative drawings, specifications, preliminary studies and reports to ensure conformity with good practice.
  • Actively participate in professional organizations. Prepare and make presentations to clients and professional organizations.
  • Review and, if appropriate, recommend for approval requests for computerized equipment and software to support the design and engineering functions, which ensures cost effectiveness, high productivity, and maximum flexibility.
  • Identify, recommend, and monitor the training and development of designers, architects, and engineers to ensure high‑level performance by these individuals.
  • Approve succession plans throughout the engineering department and ensure that training and development for key individuals are completed so that the individuals are prepared to take on increased responsibilities when appropriate.
  • Assist marketing, communication, and sales when their need involves design or engineering information to assist in the success of Company’s sales and marketing efforts.
  • Review and submit for management approval annual budgets for the engineering department.
  • For historical and planning purposes maintain a monthly index of engineering backlog.
  • Maintain liaison with Risk Management on all matters of professional liability to assist in successful prevention of liability problems and successful defense of possible liability cases should they occur.
Requirements
  • Education: a bachelor’s degree in engineering or architecture from an accredited engineering school. This position requires professional registration and the ability to secure reciprocity in multiple states via NCEES or NCARB programs.
  • Experience: Minimum of 15 years of experience of which at least five years being the manager or director level of an engineering department.
  • Skills: Good oral and written communication skills are essential; strong leadership and team management skills; strong understanding of regulatory requirements and compliance standards in the engineering sector; ability to drive change and foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement; Experience with financial management and budgeting for engineering projects.
