Description du poste

ZRG Aspen Leadership Group is proud to partner with Oberlin College and Conservatory in the search for a Vice President for Advancement.

Reporting to the President, the Vice President for Advancement (VP) will join Oberlin at a pivotal moment as it prepares for a fundraising campaign and marks its bicentennial in 2033. This is an exceptional opportunity for a high-performing and accomplished leader to join President Carmen Twillie Ambar and a veteran Executive Leadership Team known for their entrepreneurial approach and drive for excellence. The new Vice President for Advancement will join an Advancement team known for their fundraising expertise, dedication to mission, and service to alumni. In turn, Oberlin seeks a vice president who appreciates the institution's academic and musical excellence, is imaginative and well-organized, and is capable of articulating an overarching strategy.

The Vice President for Advancement will report directly to President Ambar and serve as a key member of her Executive Leadership Team, working closely with other college leaders in setting priorities and devising strategies to achieve institution-wide objectives. The Vice President will also work closely with the Board of Trustees, key volunteers, deans, and faculty members to engage, educate, mentor, and otherwise support these key stakeholders in their respective fundraising efforts, ultimately resulting in a significant expansion of the major-gift donor base and increased, sustainable major gift and overall philanthropic support for the college.

Success for the next vice president will, in part, be defined by an ability to launch, maintain, and complete an ambitious fundraising campaign, help populate the Oberlin College & Conservatory Board with effective trustees, educate and engage all members of the Oberlin community – faculty, staff, students, alumni, and senior administrators – and lead the Advancement team. In addition to launching and managing a campaign, performance goals will be aggressive and include enhancing donor discovery and cultivation efforts, engaging and communicating with alumni, recruiting new trustees, and assisting the President in personal fundraising.

Oberlin is among the most distinguished of America's liberal arts colleges. As an institution, it is deeply committed to academic and artistic excellence, to social justice, and to the use of knowledge to improve the human condition. It was the very first college in America to adopt a policy to admit African American students (1835) and the first to grant bachelor's degrees to women (1841) in a co-educational program. By admitting African Americans and women to the College in those early years, Oberlin exerted directional influence on the intellectual and humanistic values of American higher education.

At the heart of Oberlin is its profound commitment to lifelong learning and the life of the mind, both as an end itself and as a foundation for achieving other worthwhile goals. Over the course of decades, Oberlin has been the source of more future PhD's than any other liberal arts college in the country. Its alumni include four Nobel laureates, several Pulitzer Prize winners, and more MacArthur Fellows than any other liberal arts college in the nation. Oberlin is distinct among liberal arts colleges for the breadth and caliber of its components, which in practice drives the institution to function more like a small university. With the College of Arts & Sciences and the Conservatory of Music, Oberlin boasts two distinctive and field-leading academic bodies.

Fundraising plays a significant role in Oberlin's operations, as well as its academic and musical investments. In the last academic year, the Advancement team exceeded many of their goals, raising $41.6 million in cash donations and recorded $50.9 million in attainment. Philanthropy has played a significant role at Oberlin including in the development of the popular Business major, other academic initiatives, supporting the Allen Memorial Art Museum, and continued support of the operations and development at Park Arts. During President Ambar's tenure, Oberlin's endowment has grown from about $887 million to about $1.6 billion, and the institution has avoided withdrawing from the endowment extraordinarily.

A bachelor's degree and at least ten years of progressively responsible fundraising and managerial experience in advancement, preferably within higher education, is required for this position. Experience leading all aspects of a complex team, including managing, retaining, motivating, and evaluating staff is essential.

Oberlin College & Conservatory will consider candidates with a broad range of backgrounds. If you are excited about this role and feel that you can contribute to Oberlin, but your experience does not exactly align with every qualification listed above, we encourage you to apply. All applications must be accompanied by a cover letter and résumé. Cover letters should be responsive to the mission of Oberlin and the responsibilities and qualifications specified in the position prospectus.
