Help build the finance function of a company that builds America's submarines and aircraft carriers.
Riggins Company is a certified naval nuclear fabricator serving the two prime contractors behind America's submarine and aircraft carrier fleets: HII–Newport News Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Electric Boat. From our facilities in Hampton, Virginia, next to the Newport News shipyard, we fabricate nuclear weldments, structural assemblies, and related components for the Columbia-class, Virginia-class, and carrier programs.
We're now hiring our first Vice President of Finance to own the finance function, partner with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team, and help position the business for its next stage of growth.
Why This Role
- You'll build the function with a focus on the processes, the systems, and the team.
- The business is growing fast and has an active acquisition pipeline.
- You'll work directly with the CEO, the Board, and a PE sponsor that invests in its people.
- The mission matters. Our work goes into the U.S. Navy's nuclear fleet.
What You'll Do
Project Accounting & Revenue Recognition
- Own the estimate-at-completion process end to end, including monthly cost-to-complete reviews with project managers
- Establish written ASC 606 revenue recognition policy for construction-type contracts
- Report bid-to-actual margin by job and work center, and find the root causes of variance
Reporting, Controls & Audit
- Deliver timely monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting to lenders and the Board
- Lead the Company through its first external audit
- Build a disciplined month-end close, reconciliation standards, and delegation of authority
FP&A
- Drive contract-level and enterprise-level planning and analysis
- Build the KPIs and dashboards the leadership team uses to make decisions
- Serve as a true thought partner to the CEO and ELT
Mergers & Acquisitions
- Lead financial diligence on acquisition targets
- Own purchase accounting, opening balance sheets, and post-close integration
Cash & Treasury
- Own the banking relationship, revolver management, and a 13-week cash forecast
- Manage working capital, with a focus on billing cadence and receivables
Systems & Team
- Play a key role in selecting and implementing a job-cost ERP
- Develop the existing controller and build a small but capable finance team
What You Bring
- Hands‑on ownership of percentage‑of‑completion accounting at a fixed‑price contractor, fabricator, or engineered‑products manufacturer. You've personally run the estimate‑at‑completion process, not just reviewed its output.
- Real controller depth, including a willingness to close the books and do cleanup work yourself
- PE‑backed company experience, including sponsor and Board reporting and life under a credit facility with covenants
- Hands‑on M&A experience: diligence, purchase accounting, and integration
- Experience leading a company through a first audit or audit readiness
- A collaborative, people‑first leadership style
- Willingness to work on‑site in Hampton and spend time on the shop floor
Strongly Preferred
- Sell‑side or quality‑of‑earnings experience on the company side
- Defense or government supply chain exposure (DFARS, prime flow‑downs, government billing)
- Job‑cost ERP selection and implementation experience
- Partnership tax fluency
- CPA
Who Thrives Here
You're operationally curious and want to know how a weldment actually gets built. You deliver tough news early. You're comfortable rolling up your sleeves. You earn credibility with a long‑tenured workforce. And you're motivated more by building something than by title.
