Job summary

Relm Insurance is seeking a Vice President of Casualty Underwriting to lead underwriting of complex Casualty risks and shape the portfolio strategy in the US market. This role blends technical underwriting with strategic leadership, fostering strong broker and client relationships while driving profitable growth.

The successful candidate will combine deep underwriting expertise with commercial acumen and global team leadership to deliver robust results in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial setting.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years’ Casualty underwriting and/or broking experience in the US insurance market.
  • Strong knowledge of General Liability, Workers’ Compensation, Auto Liability, and Umbrella/Excess.
  • Proven track record building broker relationships and generating profitable business.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic underwriting initiatives.
  • Underwrite complex Casualty risks across primary and excess lines.
  • Conduct detailed risk assessments using data and market intelligence.
  • Apply disciplined underwriting judgment per Relm guidelines.
  • Implement risk-management strategies to mitigate exposures.
  • Build and maintain relationships with brokers, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Identify and convert profitable new business while retaining existing accounts.
  • Collaborate with sales to develop broker/client engagement strategies.
  • Provide expert advice addressing clients’ insurance needs.
  • Manage and optimize the Casualty portfolio for profitability.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and identify trends for adjustments.
  • Lead and develop Underwriting Assistants for efficient workflows.
  • Contribute to Relm’s underwriting strategy and culture.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The Vice President, Casualty Underwriting willbe responsible forunderwriting complex Casualty risks and contributing to the strategic development of the portfolio.

This is both a technical and production-focused position. The successful candidate will combine strong underwriting judgement with commercial instincts,establishedbrokerrelationshipsand the ability toidentifyprofitable growth opportunities.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Develop and implement strategic underwriting initiatives aligned with Relm’s objectives and changing market conditions.

  • Underwritecomplex Casualty risks, including General Liability, Workers’ Compensation and Auto Liability.

  • Conduct detailed risk assessments using underwriting data, analyticaltoolsand relevant market intelligence.

  • Apply disciplined underwriting judgementin accordance withRelm’sguidelines,policiesand procedures.

  • Implement effectiverisk-managementstrategies to identify and mitigate potential exposures.

  • Build andmaintainstrong relationships with brokers,clientsand other industry stakeholders.

  • Identifyand convert profitable new business opportunities while supporting the retention of existing accounts.

  • Work closely with the sales and marketing teams to develop effective broker and client engagement strategies.

  • Provide expert advice and solutions that address clients’ individual insurance requirements.

  • Manage andoptimisethe Casualty portfolio to maintain a balanced and profitable book of business.

  • Monitor portfolio performance,identifyemergingtrendsand recommendappropriate adjustments.

  • Lead,supportand develop Underwriting Assistants,promotingan efficient workflow and their continued professional development.

  • Contribute toRelm’swider underwriting strategy and positively influence the culture of the business.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE
  • Minimum of 10 years’ Casualty underwriting and/orbrokingexperience within the US insurance market, withsignificant experienceacross both primary and excess business.

  • A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent qualification, in Business, Finance, Insurance, Risk Management, Actuarial Science or a related discipline.

  • In-depth technical knowledge of US Casualty products andcoverages, including General Liability, Workers’ Compensation, Auto Liability and Umbrella/Excess Liability.

  • Strong relationships with key US wholesale and retail brokers, supported by a proven record of generating andretainingprofitable business.

  • Recognisedas a credible market practitioner and thought leader within the US Casualty insurance sector.

  • Experience negotiating,preparingand drafting policy andendorsementwordings.

  • Strongportfolio-managementcapabilities, including the ability tomonitorperformance,identifytrendsand implement corrective underwriting actions.

  • Exceptionalorganisationaland time-management skills.

  • Proven leadership qualities, with the ability to build,motivateand develop a collaborative, high-performing global team.

  • A creative problem-solver with strong critical-thinking skills, sound commercialjudgementand an ethical approach to decision-making.

The annual salary for this role is structured within a range of USD$180,000to USD$220,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
