The Opportunity…
The Vice President of Affiliates II plays a critical leadership role in advancing the success, impact, and sustainability of GRID Alternatives’ affiliate operations. Currently, this position will work with 8 regional affiliates - 6 regional affiliates in California (Oakland, Sacramento, Fresno, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego), 1 regional affiliate in Colorado (Denver), and 1 regional affiliate in the Mid-Atlantic (Washington, DC). Other affiliates may be established as GRID Alternatives expands.
This position is responsible for strengthening alignment between headquarters (HQ) and affiliates, fostering collaboration across affiliates, and ensuring accountability for affiliate performance. As a direct manager to affiliate Executive Directors, the VP of Affiliates II provides clear guidance, support, and oversight to drive results and uphold organizational values. In addition to their management responsibilities, the VP of Affiliates II serves as a strategic thought partner and advocate—helping to identify and remove barriers, build leadership capacity, and promote cohesion throughout the affiliates.
As a member of GRID's Executive Team, the VP of Affiliates II helps to shape and implement organizational policies and strategic direction. Reporting to the Chief Operations and Affiliate Officer, the VP of Affiliates II will work closely with the VP of Operations and other HQ leaders to support effective, mission-aligned affiliate operations and to advance GRID’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity within a framework of social, economic, and environmental justice.
Responsibilities
Affiliate Oversight & Support
- Supervise and provide strategic guidance and coaching to Executive Directors (EDs) and Executive Director teams (co-EDs) of GRID affiliates. On a day-to-day basis, this looks very typical in terms of management (i.e., thought partnership, accountability, support, coaching, oversight), however annual review, hiring, and firing are done in partnership with regional Affiliate Boards of Directors.
- Hold affiliate Executive Directors and Co-Executive Directors accountable for maintaining affiliate good standing, including meeting goals related to impact, financial health, and team culture, and upholding organizational values and policies. A key priority is the successful delivery of production goals (e.g., solar and storage projects), which may require partnering with affiliates to restructure teams, strengthen operational processes, and implement performance improvement strategies.
- Support affiliate Executive Directors and Co-Executive Directors in developing and maintaining high-performing affiliate Boards of Directors that are actively engaged in advancing GRID’s mission and opening doors to community and funding opportunities. This includes serving as a thought partner on board composition and recruitment, providing trainings and resources on effective board engagement, and facilitating peer learning and best practice sharing among the affiliates.
- Support affiliate Executive Directors and Co-Executive Directors in developing and executing strategies for affiliate growth, stabilization, or downsizing as appropriate—aligned with funding realities and organizational goals—including staffing plans, operational adjustments, and community engagement.
- Collaborate with affiliate leadership to identify and address organizational barriers to effectiveness, sustainability, and impact.
- Partner with HQ departments to ensure affiliates have access to timely support, guidance, and resources.
Organizational Alignment & Collaboration
- Strengthen communication and collaboration between HQ and affiliates and among affiliates.
- Ensure consistent implementation of organization-wide strategic priorities and operational standards across affiliates, while actively engaging affiliate leadership in shaping these priorities to reflect affiliate insights and adapt to regional contexts.
- Facilitate shared learning and cross-affiliate initiatives to improve outcomes and efficiency.
- Serve as a conduit between affiliates and HQ, advocating for affiliate priorities in strategic and operational planning and decisions to ensure affiliate needs are reflected in resource allocation, policy development, funding strategies, and program design and implementation.
Strategic Leadership
- Serve as a member of GRID’s Executive Team, helping to steward the organization and shape its long-term strategic direction. With several major multiyear initiatives underway—such as EPA’s Solar for All and DAC-SASH—this role is critical in planning and supporting affiliates to pivot, scale, or adapt their operations, staffing, and impact in alignment with organizational goals.
- Lead or contribute to organization-wide, cross-functional initiatives that strengthen affiliate capacity, drive program innovation, and increase impact. These initiatives may include internal equity efforts as well as program development and implementation, such as solar + storage.
- Partner with the Chief Operations and Affiliate Officer and other senior leaders to develop and refine policies related to affiliate governance, operations, performance, and sustainability.
What You Need To Bring To This Role...
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive executive leadership experience, including at least 5 years in multi-site or affiliate-based nonprofit management.
- Experience managing or coaching Executive Directors/senior leaders and engaging with Boards of Directors.
- Proven ability to lead through influence, collaboration, and relationship-building across a decentralized organization and to hold others accountable with compassion, clarity, and consistency.
- Demonstrated strength in strategic thinking, organizational planning, and change management, with the ability to shift seamlessly between big-picture vision and detailed execution.
- Strong financial management and budgeting skills, with demonstrated experience having full responsibility for the profit and loss (P&L) of an organization or department.
- Experience in operations, program management, or organizational development.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills with a restorative lens.
- Demonstrated commitment to social, economic, and environmental justice.
It would be great if you also had...
- Experience working in a networked or affiliate-based nonprofit model.
- Familiarity with solar, renewable energy, workforce development, or environmental justice sectors.
- Experience with nonprofit governance, including Board development and accountability practices.
- Proficient with Microsoft suite, Google suite, Salesforce, Asana, and other productivity tools.
- Ability to travel periodically to affiliate locations across the U.S.
- Hired CA candidates must be able to pass a screening for drugs that are illegal in the state of California, including: amphetamine, cocaine metabolite, opiates, and PCP.
Where you will sit & the places you may go…
This position may require 10%-25% out-of-town travel to regional offices and special projects. Availability to work nights and weekends may be required.
GRID Alternatives may provide vehicles for work travel and/or travel reimbursement for personal vehicle use. In this instance, applicants must hold a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.

($175k- $205k annually), plus the benefits listed below.
