VICE DEAN, GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION AND DESIGNATED INSTITUTIONAL OFFICIAL

The Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine (LSOM) at UT Health San Antonio seeks a Vice Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official to provide energetic leadership and to promote excellence in medical education. This position represents a transformational leadership opportunity at one of the nation’s largest and most dynamic GME Sponsoring Institutions. The Vice Dean is charged with defining and ensuring a healthy clinical learning environment, creating, evaluating, and implementing an ongoing educational improvement model, and aligning GME resources consistent with the institutional mission. Additionally, the successful candidate will be responsible for resident engagement, satisfaction, and quality. Developing and maintaining excellent working relationships with various governing bodies is critical in this role. Advocating for GME and informing key stakeholders of its value are also essential. The Vice Dean will be expected to develop and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders including sustaining the strong relationships with University Health (i.e. Bexar County Medical District) and the South Texas Veterans Health Care and must work collaboratively with the other clinical sites (i.e. multiple other hospitals and ambulatory care sites) in San Antonio. The Long School of Medicine has approximately 984 active residents and oversees 104 GME programs (61 ACGME-accredited) with no institutional citations. The Office of Graduate Medical Education benefits from a committed staff that includes Associate and Assistant Deans, and Program Directors Coordinators and Managers. The Office has also developed a cadre of well-functioning Standing Committees (Education, Compliance/Accreditation, Quality Improvement/Patient Safety, Wellness/Resident Work Life, Programs and a House Staff Council) that play an instrumental role in drafting policies and practices to help ensure graduate medical education programs that meet national standards.

The Vice Dean is expected to devote approximately 80 percent of his/her effort to this administrative role, and 20 percent of his/her effort to his/her clinical faculty position, open to more clinical time dependent upon specialty. The successful candidate should have their scholarly activity and professional contributions focused primarily on Education and/or Service. The Vice Dean will be expected to practice medicine.

• Time Off- A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options:
• Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.
• Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.
• Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment.
