Job description

WSU College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Teaching Hospital is seeking skilled Veterinary Technicians to support a variety of specialty units. This is a full‑time, permanent, classified position with 24/7 operation across multiple service areas.

Emergent Surgery Technician

• Provide surgical technical support by circulating and assisting in all aspects of surgical care for all species.
• Administer anesthetic injections, draw blood, assist with C‑arm, collect specimens, and monitor vital signs.
• Coordinate with surgeons and other services to ensure efficient workflow.
• Teach and mentor fourth‑year students and personnel on surgical techniques.

Oncology Technician

• Support the oncology service in patient care, diagnostics, and treatments.
• Perform phlebotomy, specimen collection, and monitor vital signs.
• Assist with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, ultrasound, CT, and endoscopy.
• Enter medications and patient records into the electronic medical record.
• Participate in clinical oncology research and communicate protocols to students.

SA ICU & Emergency Technician

• Assist with patient stabilization and therapies in 24/7 critical‑care service.
• Place peripheral and central IV lines, urinary catheters, and conduct pain assessment.
• Administer constant‑rate infusions, monitor vitals, perform CPR, thoracocentesis, and abdominocentesis.
• Develop emergency and critical‑care knowledge of fourth‑year students with strong communication skills.

Radiology Technician

• Perform CT and MRI examinations for all species and post‑mortem specimens.
• Operate equipment, administer contrast media, and ensure safety protocols.
• Conduct quality control and maintain equipment.
• Teach students and faculty in imaging procedures and software.

Float/Pool Technician

• Serve across all departments, gaining experience with diverse species.
• Assist with oncology radiation, canine rehabilitation, underwater treadmill therapy, and advanced diagnostics.
• Provide specialty support and training to students and staff.

SAIM Technician

• Assist with diagnosis and treatment in Internal Medicine for small animals.
• Administer anesthetic injections, phlebotomy, and perform nursing care.
• Handle procedures such as ultrasound, endoscopy, radiology, and PICC lines.
• Manage records, inventory, and communication of protocols with students.
• Conduct independent technician appointments with client communication.

Community Practice Technician

• Deliver wellness and minor injury care in a private‑practice model setting.
• Perform venipuncture, IV placement, anesthesia induction, dental radiographs, and oral surgery assistance.
• Mentor fourth‑year students with clear communication and patience.

Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree from an AVMA‑accredited veterinary technology school or equivalent education and experience as defined by Washington State Department of Health licensing requirements.
• License as a Veterinary Technician in Washington within six months of hire.
• Eligibility to sit for the Washington State veterinary technician exam and pass on first attempt.
• Pass WSU radiation safety training exam on the first attempt.
• For Veterinary Technician/Specialist 2: Minimum 1 year of full‑time experience as Specialist1 or equivalent.
• For Veterinary Technician/Specialist 3: Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of applicable experience or two years as a technician with laboratory animal work and supervision experience.
• Preferred: Experience teaching/trainee students in specialty or academic practice.
• Evening, weekend, or overnight schedule may be required.

Salary & Benefits

Monthly salary ranges: Veterinary Technician1: $3,752 – $5,011; Veterinary Technician2: $4,542 – $6,107; Veterinary Technician3: $4,882 – $6,576. Salaries begin at the bottom of the range with scheduled increases per WAC357‑28.
