Job Summary

The Veterinary Technician supports the veterinary care team in maintaining the health and welfare of laboratory animals used in research. This role involves performing routine and specialized clinical procedures across multiple species, assisting with anesthesia and treatment plans, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and ethical standards. The position requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, regulated laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities
Animal Care & Clinical Support
  • Perform routine and specialized veterinary procedures for laboratory animals across multiple species.
  • Assist with anesthesia administration and monitoring.
  • Triage and assess clinical cases, implement treatment plans, and monitor recovery.
  • Support preventative health programs and ongoing welfare assessments.
  • Maintain accurate medical records, databases, and treatment documentation.
Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure adherence to applicable animal welfare regulations and guidelines (USDA, OLAW, FDA, AAALAC).
  • Support inspections, audits, and compliance documentation.
  • Follow institutional animal care and use protocols at all times.
Collaboration & Operational Support
  • Work closely with veterinarians, animal care staff, and research teams to ensure animal welfare and study integrity.
  • Maintain inventories, supplies, and controlled materials.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Utilize digital communication tools to collaborate in hybrid work environments when applicable.
Education & Experience
  • Associate's degree in a related field preferred (or equivalent 2‑year college education).
  • 1‑2 years of experience working with animals in a pre‑clinical laboratory or clinical setting.
  • Experience in a CRO environment with multi‑species exposure strongly preferred.
  • Strong background in veterinary technical work.
  • Experience working with non‑human primates preferred.
  • Experience administering and monitoring anesthesia in animals required.
  • Experience triaging and assessing clinical cases and implementing treatment plans required.
Certifications & Licensure
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of animal care and use regulations and governing agencies (USDA, OLAW, FDA, AAALAC).
  • High attention to detail with ability to maintain complex records and databases.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including ability to manage conflict and competing priorities.
  • Self‑motivated and capable of working independently in a fast‑paced environment under tight deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines to ensure animal welfare and business continuity.
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools (video conferencing, messaging platforms, etc.).
Work Environment & Schedule
  • Full‑time, on‑site presence required.
  • Occasional evening, overnight, or weekend work required.
  • Essential role during company closures to maintain life‑sustaining animal care and biological materials.
  • May be required to report on‑site during adjusted operations to support ongoing research activities.
Immunizations & Health Requirements
  • Direct work with laboratory animals including non‑human primates, rabbits, rats, and mice.
  • Proof of negative tuberculosis (TB) test required.
  • Proof of measles immunity (positive titer) required; vaccination may be necessary if immunity is insufficient.
  • Pre‑employment and annual auditory and respiratory clearances required.
Physical & Vision Requirements
  • Normal color vision (ability to distinguish between colors).
  • Ability to see clearly at varying distances and maintain adequate near vision.
