Veterinary Technician (onsite housing or sign on bonus 2k, relocation option*)

Summary: In close collaboration with the Veterinarian and Animal Care management, the Veterinary Technician works to apply evidence-based, holistic care practices to provide environments conducive to optimal physical, emotional, cognitive, and social health for all residents. This position coordinates and manages vaccine and health check schedules, annual/biannual treatments, vet visits, cattle hoof trimming, and sheep shearing. Additionally, they ensure the Sanctuary Veterinarian and external vets are kept up to date on cases. This role provides oversight and leadership to the Wellness team and collaborates closely with the Research & Animal Welfare team in implementing goal-oriented animal welfare programs, including the provision of daily enrichment and the use of positive training for cooperative care.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs vet tech responsibilities, such as administering medications, collecting diagnostic samples, administering sedation and/or anesthesia under the direction of the veterinarian, and assisting with or performing euthanasia.
  • Handles critical resident cases using sound judgment to stabilize animals, at times, in the absence of a clinician.
  • Collaborates directly with the Sanctuary Veterinarian and performs work under their guidance.
  • Maintains healthcare-related schedules and creates vet visit lists.
  • Disseminates information over Basecamp/Animal Care Software.
  • Oversees Veterinarian appointments and ensures the Sanctuary Veterinarian is kept up-to-date on all cases.
  • Facilitates healthcare meetings.
  • Works with Animal Care and Research & Animal Welfare teams to implement enrichment and animal learning opportunities programs.
  • Collaborates with the Animal Welfare Coordinator to incorporate cooperative care techniques.
  • Acts as a Farm Sanctuary Animal Care representative for tours, media, events, etc.
  • Supports the Animal Care Intern Program by working with interns onsite in daily tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned by veterinarian and/or Wellness leadership.

Physical Requirements:

  • Range of sedentary to medium work exerting in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 35 pounds of force frequently to move objects with prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Must be able to bend, lift, push, stoop, stretch, climb, and crawl, and perform other strenuous physical activities.
  • Must be able to communicate with others to exchange information via telephone, video conferencing, and other forms of electronic communication utilizing computers and smartphones.
  • Close visual acuity required to operate vehicles, equipment, prepare and analyze data and figures, transcribe, and view a computer terminal.
  • Exposure to environmental conditions; must regularly perform job responsibilities in various weather conditions.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Must be able to perform precise tasks such as administering injections, drawing blood, placing IV catheters, and handling small instruments and equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • New York state Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) Certification required.
  • Ideally two years of experience at an Animal Sanctuary or animal-care related organization.
  • Excellent organizational and proven leadership skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of animal welfare and willingness to explore innovative animal care practices that center on animal agency.
  • Resourcefulness and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, troubleshoot, and ensure project completion.
  • Alignment with Farm Sanctuary’s values of compassion, understanding, integrity, transformation, and freedom.
  • Familiarity with equity, social justice, and the principles embedded in Farm Sanctuary’s mission.

Specifications:

  • Terms of Employment: Full-time, non-exempt, hourly position.
  • Compensation: $24/hour.
  • Report to: Program Director of Animal Care.
  • Schedule: Variable schedule with weekend and holiday availability required; evening hours may be required during summer months; on-call shifts as assigned.
  • Travel: Occasional travel, once or twice a month, may be required to assist with transport for animal adoptions or rescues.
