Job summary

Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care (PVESC) in Portland, Maine, seeks an Oncology Veterinary Technician to support patients from diagnosis through chemotherapy and follow-up. You will work closely with board-certified oncologists in a fast-paced, collaborative specialty setting.

The role offers a full-time schedule, competitive hourly pay starting at $25–$38 per hour, and opportunities for growth, mentorship, and cross-training within a multi-specialty team.

Qualifications

  • Licensed or credentialed veterinary technician or experienced veterinary assistant.
  • Experience in specialty medicine and/or oncology preferred.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Confidence in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Administer medications and chemotherapy under supervision of an oncologist.
  • Assist with diagnostics including lab work, imaging, and CT scans.
  • Support oncology appointments and manage patient flow and scheduling.
  • Assist with radioactive I131 program for hyperthyroid cats.
  • Maintain accurate medical records, treatment notes, and drug logs.
  • Provide empathetic client communication and education.
  • Collaborate with Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Radiology teams.
  • Deliver patient-centered care during treatment.

Anticipated Schedule

This is a full-time position.

  • Monday-Friday: 8:0 AM - 6:30 PM, 4-day work week with one weekday off and weekends off, final schedule to be discussed during interview process
  • Occasional holidays are required

What You Ll Do

As an Oncology Veterinary Technician you ll work closely with our board-certified oncologists to support patients throughout their treatment from diagnosis through chemotherapy and follow-up. You ll be a steady, compassionate presence for both patients and families.

In This Role, You Will
  • Administer medications and chemotherapy under the supervision of an oncologist

Who We Are Looking For
  • Licensed or credentialed veterinary technician, or experienced veterinary assistant
  • Experience in specialty medicine and/or oncology preferred
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Confidence working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Familiarity with veterinary medical software (e.g., EzyVet, SmartFlow) a plus
  • A positive attitude and commitment to compassionate care
