BluePearl Pet Hospital in Malvern, PA is hiring an extraordinary Medical Oncology Veterinary Technician!

A BluePearl Oncology Technician is someone who is self-motivated, a quick thinker, and is able to multi-task efficiently. Good communication skills and compassion are a must . Prefer to have a minimum of two or more years' experience in a specialty veterinary hospital. The right candidate will be responsible for treating and monitoring patients as well as supporting the clinician with patient care and client communication.

Shift: 4 x 10 hour shifts.

As a Medical Oncology Technician, you will:

  • Perform physical exam; accurately count heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort.
  • Understand normal vital and lab parameters and alerts doctor when abnormal.
  • Perform phlebotomy.
  • P lace peripheral intravenous catheter in cephalic vein.
  • Calculate basic medical math.
  • S et up appropriate materials for chemotherapy administration.
  • S afely dispense and administer oral chemotherapy agents.
  • S afely dispense, reconstitute and administer SC/IM chemotherapy agents.
  • C heck chemotherapy agent calculations and dosages.
  • P roperly shave and wrap for an IV catheter for chemotherapy infusion.
  • Have the k nowledge of chemotherapy extravasation and what to do if it happens.
  • A dmit Oncology patients and obtain thorough history including current medications and dosages, response to treatment and side effects, intensity and duration.
  • Discharge Oncology patients from the hospital, including basic client education such as how to handle patient eliminations after chemotherapy, how to handle oral chemotherapy at home, chemotherapy and radiation side effects and oral medication administration.
  • Maintain solid grasp of common veterinary medical terms and abbreviations and is able to converse with other veterinary professionals in medical terms.
  • A ddress client concerns and answer them appropriately during visits, updates, or after hospitalization. Quickly and competently facilitates incoming calls.
  • Have the k nowledge of the tumor types.
  • Understand diagnostic work-up protocols (including oncology-specific terminology for each tumor/cancer type per each hospital's protocol.
  • Possess a working knowledge of anesthesia/monitoring equipment and assist with patients assigned ASA I or II classifications.
  • Remain current on R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrates proficiency in designated role as assigned by attending clinician and/or supervisor.
  • Maintain hospital for day to day function and operation (stocking, cleaning, etc.).
