Job summary

University of Minnesota seeks an experienced Veterinary Technician to support DVMs and LA clinicians in radiology, surgery, anesthesia, and emergency care. You will assist with procedures, restrain large animals, collect samples, and maintain records and inventory.

Under MVMA/MAVT supervision, you will deliver high‑quality clinical care, ensure safety protocols, and provide exceptional client communication in a fast-paced hospital setting in the Twin Cities.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Veterinary Technician program, certified MVMA/MAVT technician.
  • Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills; knowledge of veterinary terminology.
  • Flexibility to meet patient care needs and capability to work with large animals.

Responsibilities

  • Assist clinicians and staff with admissions, discharges, and patient workups.
  • Restrain and handle large animals or assist with restraint as needed.
  • Perform vaccinations, IV injections, sample collection, and basic procedures under DVM supervision.
  • Maintain procedural records and ensure accurate charging per hospital fee schedule.
  • Keep hospital areas clean, stocked, and equipment in working order.
  • Provide courteous patient and client service, answer inquiries, and support cross-functional LA services.

About the Job

Under the direction of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, contributes to the health and well‑being of patients by delivering outstanding, high‑quality veterinary technical services that meet the standards of the MVMA and MAVT as well as VMC standards and protocols. Assists LA clinicians and other medical staff members with veterinary medical procedures, including medical treatments, triage, radiology, surgery and therio prep, anesthesiology, emergency care, laboratory procedures, radiography, IV injections, vaccinations, bandaging, filling prescriptions, animal restraint and handling, etc.

Responsibilities
  • Assists clinicians, clients and patients with admissions, discharges, assessment and work‑up; prepares large animal patients for radiographic, surgical and therio prep, catheterization, venipuncture, vaccinations, foal and colic team assistance, administration of medications and treatments, preparation of pharmaceuticals, etc.
  • Must be able to restrain and handle large animals or assist with large animal restraint and handling.
  • Under the direction of DVMs, performs vaccinations, IV injections, obtains fluid or tissue samples, performs biopsy techniques, administers medications, obtains fluid or tissue samples, bandages, triages medical care, etc.
  • Under oversight by a DVM, administers medications, vaccinations, allergy testing and other duties as defined by the clinicians.
  • Applies clinical job knowledge and competence to the management of the patient.
  • Maintains isolation protocols.
  • Performs barn upkeep and some maintenance.
  • Delivers outstanding customer service by greeting and receiving patients and clients in a caring and courteous manner, answering phone calls promptly, responding to clients, co‑workers and medical staff needs and requests, redirecting calls, etc.
  • Answers questions and explains or demonstrates procedures and equipment for clients, interns, senior veterinary students and technician students.
  • Performs record‑keeping tasks related to medical procedures, including recording procedures completed, supplies used, patient status, client communications, census information, etc.
  • Ensures that all services and supplies are charged according to the hospital fee schedule.
  • Maintains a clean environment in the hospital area and ensures that these areas are adequately ordered, stocked and that equipment is in working order.
  • Assists in other LA service areas; develops skills that are cross‑functional and uses time efficiently.
  • Must be able to work in a clinical setting.
  • Must work “on call.”
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Graduate of a Veterinary Technician or equivalent program, certified as MVMA/MAVT technician.

Preferred Qualifications / Selection Criteria: Problem‑solving skills, strong interpersonal skills, knowledge of veterinary medicine terminology, knowledge of proper restraint and comfort handling large animals, flexibility to meet patient care needs, certified technician with Minnesota‑recognized certification, proficiency with PC and software.

Pay and Benefits
  • Pay Range: $22.53 to $26.40; depending on education, qualifications and experience.
  • Time Appointment: 100% Appointment.
  • Position Type: Civil‑Service & Non‑Faculty Labor Represented Staff.
