Veterinary Technician – Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

ICU Overview:

The purpose of an ICU is to provide a dedicated area for critical patients requiring intensive care, organized to administer the highest level of close monitoring and care. Our ICU handles critical patients and those at risk of decompensation, requiring close observation. It is open to all services, so patients from all departments are cared for here.

We are hiring exceptional Veterinary Technicians to join our growing ICU nursing team. Our team values caring for the sickest patients, attention to detail, and advancing critical care nursing skills. ICU nurses work closely with ICU doctors to ensure prompt recognition of patient decompensation. Nurses play a vital role in patient recovery and will have increased responsibilities. Below are ICU-specific skills and procedures expected of each nurse; these are taught over time and are not required for initial application. Organization and maintaining a clean work environment are essential qualities.

As an ICU technician, your skill set includes:
  • Nasogastric tube placement
  • Urinary catheter placement (male and female)
  • Central line placement
  • Single and double lumen PICC lines
  • Triple lumen jugular catheters
  • Arterial puncture for blood gas analysis
  • Arterial catheter placement and care
  • Thoracic auscultation
  • Perfusion analysis
  • Basic electrolyte and blood gas analysis
  • CPR
  • Nursing care for patients on mechanical ventilators
  • Nursing care for patients with tracheostomies
  • Nursing care for patients with chest tubes and abdominal drains
  • Nursing care for patients with feeding tubes and administering nutrition
  • Calculating CRIs (analgesics, inotropes, vasopressors, electrolytes, etc.)

Experience & Skills Requirements:
  • RVT preferred
  • 3 years veterinary assisting/technician experience

Overnight / Weekend Differential: $3 - $5 per hour additional to base pay

Swing and Overnight shifts.

Compensation is negotiable based on credentials and experience, with an hourly pay rate starting at $22 - $43/hour. The actual rate will consider various factors, including skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
