Qualifications

Responsibilities

General Description

JOIN OUR TEAM AS A VETERINARY TECHNICIAN III

This position requires skilled technical work assisting in medical procedures, evaluation, triage and treatment of shelter animals, clinic operations including experience in spay, neuter and other surgical operations. Supervisory duties including scheduling of team members and monitoring of work performance will be required. Duties will require euthanasia certification.

Essential Job Functions

Administers daily routines of veterinary technicians; medication rounds, triage of shelter animals; and oversee customer service needs. Works closely with Shelter Veterinarians to ensure clinic operations run efficiently. Prepares animals for surgery, performs pre-and post-surgical observations of animals and reports condition changes and maintains surgical records. Administers oral medication, vaccines, anesthesia and intra-muscular, subcutaneous and intravenous injections, and performs euthanasia. Records, controls and maintains security of federally restricted drugs and barbiturates. Answers questions from the public concerning medical problems and laws relating to Animal Control in the community. Actively engages volunteers to support veterinary duties and programs. Ability to handle animals and equipment of up to 80 pounds. Performs other department related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Knowledge of humane methods of care, restraint and handling of animals and the techniques used in the care and feeding of animals.
• Knowledge of the basic procedures used in animal control and of animal control regulations.
• Knowledge of animal shelter veterinary clinic operations.
• Ability to recognize and identify breeds and behavioral characteristics of animals.
• Knowledge of veterinary medical and surgical practices and procedures and laboratory procedures.
• Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public.
• Ability to lead others and complete tasks independently or in a team environment.
• Ability to maintain records and compile statistical reports.
• Ability to establish and maintain inventory of supplies including controls medications.

Minimum Requirements

PHYSICAL SKILLS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to handle animals and equipment of up to 80 pounds. Extended periods of bending, stretching, stooping, kneeling, reaching and climbing. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and four (4) years’ experience working in a veterinary hospital or clinic performing duties outlined above required. Two (2) years' experience working as a Lead Vet Tech or Supervisor in a veterinary setting preferred. Experience handling animals in a shelter environment preferred.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Florida driver's license. Valid Florida Veterinary Medical Technician Certification required. Ability to obtain State certification in euthanasia procedures within six (6) months of hire. Must have phone in service 30 days after employment.
