Job summary

Clay County Animal Services is seeking a licensed veterinary technician to join the medical team. You will assist veterinarians with daily rounds, surgeries, and examinations while managing medications, testing, and recordkeeping for shelter and foster animals.

Responsibilities

• Provides animals in the shelter’s care with daily medications, basic physical examinations, recheck exams, blood draws, re-vaccination, and monthly heartworm and flea prevention.
• Completes basic diagnostic testing such as fecal exams, skin scrapes, ear cytology, urinalysis, heartworm testing, and FeLV/FIV testing.
• Performs routine observations of animals and cages to monitor health and safety.
• Assists veterinarian with daily rounds, surgery, animal restraint, physical examinations, rechecks, testing and treatments.
• Assists the Foster Coordinator with foster parent coordination via email and phone, scheduling and assisting with foster appointments.

Under the general direction of the Shelter Medical Director, the position ensures the medical and surgical care of the animals at Clay County Animal Services and in foster care are being met. Responsible for assisting the veterinarian with surgery, examinations, and appointments. Position is required to work a rotating schedule which includes weekends and holidays with rotating days off. The schedule is subject to change at any time. The position also requires on-call availability, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

• Provides animals in the shelter’s care with daily medications, basic physical examinations, recheck exams, blood draws, re-vaccination, and monthly heartworm and flea prevention

• Completes basic diagnostic testing, such as fecal exams, skin scrapes, ear cytology, urinalysis, heartworm testing, and FeLV/FIV testing

• Performs routine observations of animals and their cages to monitor food consumption, behavior, obvious signs of illness, and condition of the animals for health and safety purposes

• Assists veterinarian with daily rounds, surgery, animal restraint, physical examinations, rechecks, testing and treatments

• Assists the Foster Coordinator with foster parent coordination via email and phone, scheduling and assisting with foster appointments

• Cleans and disinfects kennels, cages, and related areas in the medical department

• Assists members of the public searching for lost animals or seeking to adopt animals

• Helps maintain current and accurate medical records on each animal in the shelter software

• Ensures that animals are flowing through the shelter system quickly and efficiently

• Ensures that all animals are processed for surgery and adoption.

• Performs other duties as assigned, including working in other areas to cover absences or provide relief for other employees.

Minimum Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
• Minimum of two years experience as a veterinary technician
• Certified Euthanasia Technician (Preferred; Must attain within one year of hire)
• Valid Florida driver’s license with clean driving record
• Any combination of education and experience may be substituted, so long as it provides the desired skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Constantly positions self to inspect and assess animals for wellness, temperament and potential foster or adoptive placement.

Must be able to inspect, assess and perceive condition of animals and related data and information and to summarize relevant data for supervisors and medical staff

Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.

Frequently communicates with supervisors, other staff, including medical staff, and the public regarding animal welfare and foster placement and procedures. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

The worker is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. Indoor exposure may include dust, dander, and fur. External exposure may include inclement weather, extreme temperatures, humidity, and pollution. Position risks exposure to bites, scratches, animal waste, and unpleasant odors.

The noise level is typically moderate but may risk exposure to loud and unpleasant noises.
