Pickens County Animal Control Department is seeking a dedicated Animal Shelter Tech (Full-Time) to care for shelter animals, supervise volunteers, and coordinate daily activities. You will help with intake, feeding, cleaning, and transportation of animals, ensuring proper records and safety protocols are followed.
The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or GED, at least one year of related experience, a valid driver’s license, and completion of the mandated euthanasia technician course.
JOB TITLE:ANIMAL SHELTER TECH (Full-Time)
ANIMAL CONTROL DEPARTMENT
The purpose of this position is to perform work related to the overall care of animals within the shelter; ensures the proper feeding and care of all shelter animals, provides for the constant cleanliness of cages, runs, and shelter areas, leads and educates volunteers at the shelter, plans and coordinates the activities of inmates assigned to the shelter, and transports animals to and from events and scheduled appointments. This class works under the direction of the Animal Shelter Director, and reports progress of major activities through periodic updates.
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
Performs other related duties as required.
It is the responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Each employee must follow safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor. Each employee must also properly wear and maintain all personal protective equipment required for their job. Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.
DATA INVOLVEMENT: Requires synthesizing or integrating analysis of data or information to discover facts or develop knowledge or interpretations; changes policies, procedures or methodologies based on new facts, knowledge or interpretations. Logging in all animal data.
PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT: Requires planning, directing others in the sequence of activities, and reporting on operations and activities to the Director. Requires persuading or influencing others in favor of a service, point of view, or course of action; may enforce laws, rules, and shelter policy.
INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS: Requires handling or using machines tools or equipment requiring moderate instruction or experience, such as computers for data entry, fax machines, copiers, telephones or similar equipment, cameras, animal control equipment, chemical immobilization, etc.; may service office machines, including adding paper and changing toner.
REASONING REQUIREMENTS: Requires performing work involving the application of logical principles and thinking to solve practical problems within or applying to a unit or division of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires using addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and/or calculating ratios, rates and percentages.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS: Requires reading journals, manuals and professional publications; speaking informally to groups of co-workers, staff in other organizational agencies, the general public, people in other organizations; presenting training; composing original reports, training and other written materials using proper language, punctuation, grammar and style.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires doing professional-level work requiring the application of principles and practices in a wide range of administrative, technical or managerial methods in the solution of administrative or technical problems; or the coordination of entry-level managerial work; requires general understanding of operating policies and procedures and the ability to apply these to complex administrative problems; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results or frequent exposure to unusual pressures.
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION: Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by education and/or experience in the care and keeping of domestic animals and livestock as well as the adoption of animals.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Requires one (1) year of related work experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Must possess a valid state driver's license. Must complete required certified euthanasia technician course.
PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, climbing, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. Walks and/or stands for long periods of time, frequently works in a bent position. Also requires considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy. May be required to use strength or agility in capturing and restraining stronger, more active animals.
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dust and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, animals/wildlife, bites, scratches, animal waste, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, violence. Possible exposure to contagious diseases.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, color perception, odor perception, depth and texture perception.
Decision-making is almost the entire focus of the job, affecting most segments of the organization and the general public; works in a highly dynamic environment; responsible for establishing goals, objectives.
