Job summary

The Baylor College of Medicine Center for Comparative Medicine seeks a Veterinary Technician to join our on-site team in Houston, TX. You will provide veterinary care, monitor health, and assist with anesthesia and daily records for laboratory animals.

Requirements include an Associate's degree in a related field; ALAT certification within one year of hire and no experience required. This position is not visa-sponsored and BCM is an Equal Opportunity employer.

Responsibilities

  • Provides veterinary care to all BCM animals.
  • Performs daily rounds, health checks, and treatments under the guidance of veterinarians.
  • Maintains health and treatment records in written and electronic form.
  • Maintains daily treatment, anesthetic, drug logs and inventory records.
  • Provides research support including injections, blood collection, anesthesia, postoperative care as directed by veterinarian.
  • Cleans, prepares, packs, and sterilizes surgical instruments/equipment.
  • Maintains veterinary equipment such as gas anesthesia machines and digital radiography.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Work Arrangement: Onsite only

Location: Houston, TX

Salary Range: $39,150 - $46,059

FLSA Status: Nonexempt

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Summary

The Center for Comparative Medicine provides for the care, health and well-being of all research animals used in the pursuit of scientific achievement and excellence at Baylor College of Medicine. CCM provides the highest quality veterinary and animal care and acts as a resource for the faculty on veterinary and scientific issues relating to the use of laboratory animals.

Participates in all aspects of the health and welfare of laboratory animals, including daily monitoring and treatment, maintaining accurate health records, and providing requested technical services that includes inducing and monitoring anesthesia for multiple species.

Job Duties
  • Provides veterinary care to all animals at BCM.
  • Performs daily observational rounds, health checks, and treatments on animal patients, under the guidance of veterinarians.
  • Maintains these observations in both written and electronic animal records.
  • Responsible for maintaining daily treatment records as well as, anesthetic records, post-operative records, drug logs, and inventory records.
  • Provides research support to investigators, which can include injections, blood collections, anesthesia support, post-operative care, and treatment as directed by veterinarian.
  • Cleans, prepares, packs, and sterilizes surgical instruments/equipment.
  • Maintains veterinary technical equipment such as gas anesthesia machines, and digital radiography in proper working order.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in a related field. Two years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.
  • Certified Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). Certification must be obtained within one year of hire or promotion.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of relevant experience.
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT).
