The Veterinary Technician is the veterinarian’s primary medical support and plays a vital role within the practice. Technicians must value the quality of care we provide at Metairie Small Animal Hospital and communicate this value to clients. The Technician assists the veterinarian in achieving greater efficiency in overall patient care. They will apply their technical skills in anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, laboratory testing, patient nursing care, and client education.

A Technician’s focus is ever-changing according to the priority of the moment. This role requires significant multi-tasking and creative thinking. The Technician must be detail-oriented, able to make good decisions, respond quickly and calmly to crises, and maintain high standards of patient care. Clear communication with veterinarians, practice personnel, and clients is essential to ensure patients receive the necessary care. Technicians should enjoy working with both people and animals.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Ability to bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, talk, and listen; use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. Able to lift and carry animals or materials weighing fifty pounds or more, including handling dogs up to 130 lbs.
  • Motivation, excellent communication skills, willingness to learn, and a team-oriented spirit.

  • Assist in maintaining the flow of patients and communicate effectively with veterinarians and vet techs.
  • Keep accurate medical records.
  • Restrain animals effectively and safely using fear-free techniques (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, pocket pets).
  • Prepare supplies needed for patient procedures.
  • Assist the Veterinarian in medical, surgical, and dental procedures; prepare patients for surgery; maintain anesthesia; monitor patients during surgery and recovery.
  • Carry out or set up procedures that do not require veterinarian supervision.
  • Adhere to hospital standards to keep pets safe and ensure that treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs are clean and organized.
  • Educate clients about our Paw Plans and the importance of preventive care.
  • Maintain medical equipment and surgical instruments; keep rooms prepared, stocked, and clean at all times.
  • Admit and discharge patients per DVM orders and follow-up instructions.
