Veterinary Technician – Emergency Shift Lead

Heart of Texas is looking for a Veterinary Technician – Emergency Shift Lead to join our team as part of the Thrive Pet Healthcare community.

About You

The emergency shift lead veterinary technician is responsible for providing all veterinary nursing duties in the hospital and providing direction to veterinary technicians and assistants. The shift lead should be knowledgeable in various areas and able to train staff, including client service, communication, clinical pathology, radiology, animal nursing care, anesthesia, surgical assistance, and emergency medicine. Upholding the hospital's core values and maintaining professional composure are essential.

Job Requirements:
  • 5+ years of experience as a veterinary technician in specialty and emergency practice
  • Licensure (CVT, LVT, RVT) preferred
  • Prior supervisory/management experience preferred
  • Flexibility with schedule to include weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • May be required to work overtime occasionally
Leadership:
  • Time management and delegation—assigning team members efficiently, delegating duties, and holding team accountable
  • Reviewing treatment and order sheets, ensuring smooth shift flow, acting as float technician
  • Directing team members to next tasks based on case load
  • Conducting team huddles at shift start, mid, and end to prioritize and redirect flow
  • Focusing on shift efficiency, workflow, patient care, and client service
  • Effective communication, including guiding, mentoring, coaching, and recognizing struggles
  • Communicating with hospital leadership and participating in regular check-ins
  • Possessing a solution-oriented, conflict-resolution mindset, acting as a servant leader with high EQ
  • Reinforcing policies and proven practices, including AHAA and Fear Free
Training:
  • Supporting team training per guides
  • Identifying training gaps and communicating with leadership
  • Encouraging cross-training
  • Mentoring team members, setting training goals, and providing positive reinforcement
  • Using wet labs, webinars, drills, and case studies for training
