Job summary

Veterinary Technician, Emergency & Critical Care Per Diem

Job Description

The ER/ECC Technician’s primary responsibility is to triage patients as they present to the Emergency Room according to triage levels. Assess pets and provide immediate life-saving care under the direction of the ER doctor as required for critical patients. Provide history, vitals, and concerns to doctors to assist in timely and appropriate management of emergency patients. Work with float technicians and assistants to perform diagnostics, execute treatment plans, and/or hospitalize the patient. Communicate medical updates, financial, and treatment plans to owners.

Responsibilities
  • Provide excellent patient care to every patient
  • Triage patients as they come into the ER with appropriate medical decision making and escalation to the ER doctor as appropriate
  • Obtain history and vital signs of the pet
  • Assist DVMs with exams, treatments, and procedures
  • Immediately respond to STAT calls and follow appropriate patient care protocols
  • Perform standard technician duties including patient restraint, venipuncture, SQ fluids, radiographs, medication administration as ordered by a Veterinarian, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications by veterinarian orders
  • Perform sedation and anesthesia according to established hospital protocols (induction, maintenance, monitoring and recovery)
  • Maintain accurate paperless medical records utilizing EzyVet and Smartflow
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of financial and charging practices including creating estimates and discussing with owners, collecting payment and discharging patients
  • Collaborate with all departments across the hospital to ensure optimal patient care
  • Demonstrate compassion and care in all interactions
  • Attend department and staff meetings
  • Contribute to the overall needs, cleanliness, and organization of the hospital
  • Other duties as needed
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least one year of veterinary technician experience (required)
  • Registered Veterinary Technician in Colorado, or ability to become registered upon hire
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Fluent English skills (speaking & reading); fluency in multiple languages a plus

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of veterinary technician experience in a specialty hospital, preferably in an ER
  • Ability to multitask and anticipate department needs
  • Excellent communication
  • Experience with medical record and whiteboard programs in a veterinary setting
