About the Job


Days/Hours: Sunday to Tuesday, 12:00pm to 10:30pm (75% appointment, 30 hours a week)


This position is responsible for care of patients as prescribed. Perform diagnostic tests. Update owners with status of care. Additional duties will include maintaining facilities according to VMC cleanliness standards and ordering or stocking feed and supplies, accurate record keeping, assisting with training of veterinary technical students and other duties as assigned. The specific duties and work schedule will vary based on current needs.

Responsibilities (100%)
1. Assist with medical treatments of hospital patients. This includes feeding(oral and tube), grooming, nail trims, anal glands, cleaning ears.
2. Restrain patients for procedures. Receive appointments and take histories.
3. Receive treatment room appointments.
4. Set up for procedures. Set up surgery suites, endoscopy, ultrasound, MI special procedures, ICU procedures, treatment room procedures, specialty procedures.
5. Transport samples to the labs. (Regular and Diagnostic)
6. Answer phones and set up appointments.
7. Enter schedule template. Misc paperwork.
8. Enter charges into computer, census, enter information into databases.
9. Administer oral medications. Perform TPRs
10. Shave for surgical/medical procedures.
11. Collect voided urine samples.
12. Transport animals to and from service areas.
13. Maintain hospital service areas, wards, kennels and public areas according to cleanliness standards.
14. Clean and repackage instruments and equipment.
15. Assist with patient admissions and discharges; explain general services to clients.
16. Prepare and transport patients to and from visits, give general patient updates to clients. Contact DVM and/or student when needed.
17. Maintain inventory of supplies, forms and medical items.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications/Selection Criteria:
High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications/Selection Criteria:
One year of post high school experience or education in veterinary assisting which includes: animal restraint, veterinary terminology, veterinary anatomy, patient first aid, and medication administration.
Problem solving skills, strong interpersonal skills, knowledge of veterinary medicine terminology, knowledge of proper restraint and handling of small animals. Understands and works within clinical scope of position. Flexibility to meet patient care needs. Proficiency with PC and software.

The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) has served the community for more than a century. It is the most advanced, full-service referral care center for large and small animals in Minnesota. The
VMC sees more than 35,000 cases annually, with specialists available in all areas of medicine and surgery. More than 50 of the veterinarians on staff have undergone several years of
additional training to become board-certified specialists in a particular area of veterinary medicine.


The Veterinary Medical Center is comprised of the Small Animal Hospital for dogs, cats, and other companion animals, the Piper Clinic at the new Leatherdale Equine Center, for horses, and
the Large Animal Hospital, which treats farm animals, and occasionally, zoo animals.


Pay and Benefits


Pay Range: $22.03-$23.83/hr; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
