Position
Veterinary Technician – nonexempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Opening March 31, 2025 at Paws Bay Animal Hospital.
About the Hospital
Paws Bay Animal Hospital is a new privately owned hospital located in a modern facility with 4 exam rooms, a dental suite, treatment and lab areas, and a surgery room. In‑house labs use Idexx equipment (blood analyzers, urine Sedivue, digital cellular analyzer for cytology) and we have a Digital Idexx radiology machine and handheld dental radiology unit. High‑quality anesthesia monitoring equipment is available in both surgical areas.
Schedule and Hours
- Initially part‑time, operating Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
- Additional days will be added as we become busier.
- Shifts: 8 am – 6 pm with 1 hour lunch.
- Closed on major holidays.
Education and Experience
CVT license preferred.
Non‑licensed Veterinary Technician experience minimally necessary.
Major Duties
- Assist veterinarians during appointments, procedures, and surgery/anesthesia.
- Provide in‑patient and out‑patient care.
- Perform technician examinations.
- Conduct laboratory duties.
- Administer treatments, drug dosages, and dispensing.
- Support surgery duties including anesthesia and monitoring.
- Perform dentistry.
- Maintain medical record notation.
- Perform housekeeping duties throughout the facility.
- Handle administrative tasks such as call backs, inventory awareness, OSHA compliance.
- Assist with customer service duties, including answering phones, triage calls, and scheduling appointments.
Skills and Knowledge
- Knowledge of procedures for receiving, treating, and scheduling patients.
- Knowledge of ordering medical supplies and laboratory requests.
- Knowledge of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment care.
- Knowledge of sterilization techniques for instruments and materials.
- Knowledge of standardized procedures.
- Knowledge of English language structure, meaning, spelling, composition rules, and grammar.
- Ability to work independently and accept direction on assignments.
- Critical thinking to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions.
Physical Effort / Demands
- Bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, talk, listen frequently; work in bent positions.
- Use hands to manipulate, handle, feel; reach with hands and arms.
- Use strength or agility to capture and restrain stronger, active animals.
- Frequently lift or move up to 50 lb; occasionally handle dogs over 150 lb.
- Assistance provided by animal handlers for larger animals.
Work Environment
- Exposure to hazards associated with aggressive patients, infected animals, controlled substances, unpleasant odors, noises, scratches, bites, animal wastes, and contagious diseases.
- Follow federal and state animal health laws and regulations, including OSHA and DEA.
