The Position

Essential Job Functions: The following are the essential duties and responsibilities required for this position. The candidate must be able to perform all the following duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Assist doctors with appointments, surgery, and client education.
  • Perform initial patient evaluation, reporting to the doctor regarding the nature of the visit and client concerns.
  • Triage patients upon arrival to assess urgency and communicate findings to the doctor.
  • Obtain and prepare laboratory samples such as urine, fecal, and ear cytology.
  • Restrain animals in a safe, efficient, and compassionate manner during examinations and procedures.
  • Perform venipuncture and place intravenous catheters, calculate and initiate drip rates, and administer intravenous medications.
  • Prepare and set up for surgical procedures, utilizing knowledge of proper sterile technique and ensuring equipment is in working order.
  • Monitor anesthesia and recovery of surgery patients and communicate with owners.
  • Accurately prepare and dispense medications as directed by the doctor, ensuring that medications are added to the pet’s record and appropriately charged to the client.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, healthy, and humane environment by sanitizing holding and operating areas, sterilizing and wrapping instruments, verifying shelf life, and following standards and procedures in compliance with applicable legal regulations.
  • Monitor hospitalized pets and administer treatments with compassionate care. Assure animals have food and water when appropriate, and monitor for disease and complications.
  • Utilize hospital computer systems to document medical records and communicate with clients and teammates.
  • Attend applicable meetings.
  • Perform tasks that may require long periods at a keyboard or workstation, standing, or walking.
  • Engage in tasks that may involve kneeling, crawling, bending, balancing, and crouching.
  • Take physical safety precautions for exposure to drugs, anesthesia, and radiation.

The Candidate
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a fast-paced veterinary clinic.
  • Ability to stay focused and perform accurate procedures in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Flexibility with scheduling, including availability to work weekends and holidays.
  • Advanced experience in animal handling, restraint, and performing surgical and medical procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills, strong teamwork abilities, a sense of urgency, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Proficiency in following and demonstrating safe digital radiology procedures.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, with regular lifting, cleaning, and constant motion required.
  • Capacity to work around sick or fractious animals, zoonotic diseases, hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, and anesthetic gas.
