Job summary

Actalent in Orangeburg, NY is seeking a Veterinary Technician to provide daily care for laboratory animals in a humane, safe environment and to support investigators in a research setting.

The role requires an AS degree in Veterinary Technology, 1–2 years of animal experience, and knowledge of anesthesia, surgical procedures, and diagnostic testing. This permanent, onsite position offers competitive pay and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• AS degree in Veterinary Technology or related field required.
• 1–2 years animal experience preferred, ideally in a veterinary or research setting.
• Experience with laboratory animals is a plus.
• Knowledge of veterinary technology, animal research, and surgical procedures.
• Experience in anesthesia induction, maintenance, and monitoring for laboratory animals.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily care for laboratory animals using approved procedures.
• Observe animals for disease signs and report to veterinary staff.
• Perform routine tests and analyze animal health (blood, arterial/venous blood gases, ACT).
• Restrain animals safely for examinations and anesthesia.
• Attend in-house training on animal care, procedures, and safety.
• Provide procedural and technical support to investigators and research staff.
• Ensure adherence to regulations and policies on animal care and use.
• Remain productive during slower periods by taking on extra duties (cleaning, stocking, checks).
• Participate in veterinary care and husbandry, including monitoring and specialized care for study animals.
• Assist with animal procurement, receipt, placement, and movement within the facility and off-site housing as directed.
• Assist in sanitization of vivarium and animal areas following procedures.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily care for laboratory animals in a humane, safe, and sanitary manner using appropriate equipment and established procedures.
• Observe animals for clinical signs of disease and behavioral changes, and promptly report findings to supervisory veterinary staff.
• Perform routine laboratory tests and analytical procedures to assess animal health, including blood and other diagnostic tests such as arterial and venous blood gases and ACT.
• Restrain animals safely for examinations and anesthesia induction, ensuring minimal stress and maximum safety.
• Attend in-house training programs to advance knowledge of laboratory animal science, veterinary procedures, and workplace safety.
• Provide procedural and technical support to investigators and research staff as needed.
• Ensure adherence to all applicable regulations, guidelines, and institutional policies related to animal care and use.
• Remain productive during slower periods by proactively seeking additional duties such as cleaning, stocking, and equipment checks.
• Participate in the full scope of veterinary care and husbandry, including routine monitoring and specialized care for study animals.
• Assist with animal procurement, receipt, placement, and movement within the facility and to or from off-site housing as directed.
• Participate in sanitization of the vivarium and animal areas as directed, following established cleaning and disinfection procedures.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $49000.00 - $53000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
