Job summary

Mission Pet Health in Cornelius, NC seeks a Surgery Veterinary Assistant to join a high-volume referral team. You will assist surgeons and technicians, prepare patients for surgery, maintain sterile technique, monitor recovery, and support client communications. A calm, organized mindset and the ability to lift up to 40 lbs are essential.

This full-time role offers a four-day, 10-hour workweek with benefits and ongoing professional development within a nationwide veterinary network.

Qualifications

  • Veterinary assistant experience is required; experience in a surgical or sterile environment is a strong asset.
  • Must be able to lift and carry animals up to 40 lbs and stand for long periods.
  • Calm, efficient approach in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver Hands-On Clinical Support: assist surgeons and technicians with patient exams, triage, and surgical procedures, venipuncture, medications, and radiographs.
  • Prepare and Support Every Surgery: clipping, scrubbing, positioning, sterile technique, instrument prep, and sterilization.
  • Provide Post-Operative and Compassionate Care: monitor recovery, manage pain, ensure comfort, maintain a clean facility.
  • Create a Positive Client Experience: discharge patients, review post-surgical plans, and assist with scheduling.
  • Drive Operational Excellence: maintain records, manage invoices, monitor inventory, and train new teammates.

Our CSR team will have a range of duties including greeting clients in house and on the phone, setting up referrals, facilitating check in and check out for clients, and advocating for the needs of our clients, referring veterinarians, and team! We are looking for a full time team member with benefits but will consider part-time for the right candidate. Full time schedule will be a four day work week of 10 hours/ day. These are daytime hours with no nights or weekends. Your Impact as a Surgery Veterinary Assistant
  • Deliver Hands-On Clinical Support: You'll assist surgeons and technicians with patient exams, triage, and surgical procedures, as well as performing venipuncture, administering oral medications, and taking radiographs.
  • Prepare and Support Every Surgery: You'll prepare patients for surgery by clipping and aseptically scrubbing surgical sites, assist with positioning and restraint, support sterile technique in the surgical suite, and help with surgical pack preparation, instrument cleaning, and autoclaving/sterilization.
  • Provide Post-Operative and Compassionate Care: You'll monitor patients during recovery, manage pain, and ensure patient comfort—all while maintaining a clean, organized, and sterile facility.
  • Create a Positive Client Experience: You'll discharge patients, review post-surgical treatment plans, incision care, and follow-up instructions with clients, and assist with client service operations such as answering phones and scheduling appointments.
  • Drive Operational Excellence: You'll accurately maintain medical records, prescriptions, and invoices using our computer systems, support surgical suite turnover between procedures, help monitor surgical supply inventory, and assist with training new teammates.
What You'll Bring to the Team
  • A High School Diploma or equivalent (must be at least 18 years old).
  • Veterinary assistant experience is required; experience in a surgical or sterile environment is a strong asset.
  • A calm and efficient approach, with the ability to handle a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment with composure.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • The physical capability to lift and carry animals up to 40 lbs, with comfort in prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, and physical activity.
