Job summary

The Veterinary Dental Clinic of North Carolina in Durham seeks a Credentialed Veterinary Technician to join a specialty-focused team led by a Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist. You will lead anesthesia, monitor patients, perform dental procedures, radiographs, charting, and assist with extractions and oral surgery while maintaining sterile technique.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technician program.
  • A current state veterinary technician license in good standing.
  • Experience in dentistry, anesthesia, or a specialty/referral environment is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in anesthesia monitoring, drug calculation, dental radiography, phlebotomy, and IV catheter placement.
  • A calm and efficient approach, especially in fast-paced or stressful situations.
  • Strong communication skills and a passion for working collaboratively.
  • The physical capability to lift and carry animals up to 40 lbs, with comfort in prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, and physical activity.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Anesthesia and Patient Monitoring: You'll induce, maintain, and monitor patients under general anesthesia, continuously assessing vital parameters and adjusting anesthetic depth as needed.
  • Ensure Precise Drug Calculation and Administration: You'll accurately calculate, prepare, and administer anesthetic agents, analgesics, local nerve blocks, emergency drugs, and other medications.
  • Perform Dental Procedures and Charting: You'll perform professional dental cleanings—including scaling and polishing—and assist with extractions and oral surgery while maintaining sterile technique.
  • Perform Phlebotomy and Diagnostics: You'll perform venipuncture and collect samples for laboratory analysis, place IV catheters, take radiographs, and document findings.
  • Provide Post-Procedure and Critical Care: You'll manage recovery, monitor for complications, and provide pain management and compassionate care.
  • Create a Positive Client Experience: You'll discharge patients and review home care instructions with clients.
  • Drive Operational Excellence and Mentorship: You'll maintain medical records, ensure room readiness, and help train teammates.

Job Description

Your Impact as a Credentialed Dentistry Veterinary Technician

Note: The Credentialed Veterinary Technician title is used in various states based on state-specific licensing and credentialing requirements. Responsibilities may vary depending on the hospital and/or state and will be outlined by the state's Veterinary Practice Act and/or the responsible veterinarian, where applicable.

  • Lead Anesthesia and Patient Monitoring: You'll induce, maintain, and monitor patients under general anesthesia, continuously assessing vital parameters and adjusting anesthetic depth as needed—recognizing changes in patient status and escalating concerns to the dentist promptly.
  • Ensure Precise Drug Calculation and Administration: You'll accurately calculate, prepare, and administer anesthetic agents, analgesics, local nerve blocks, emergency drugs, and other medications, ensuring precise dosing tailored to each patient.
  • Perform Dental Procedures and Charting: You'll perform professional dental cleanings—including scaling and polishing—capture and interpret full-mouth dental radiographs, complete detailed oral charting, and assist the dentist with extractions, nerve blocks, and oral surgery while maintaining proper sterile technique.
  • Perform Phlebotomy and Diagnostics: You'll perform venipuncture and collect samples for laboratory analysis, place IV catheters, take radiographs, and assist with the documentation of diagnostic findings.
  • Provide Post-Procedure and Critical Care: You'll manage patient recovery, monitor for post-procedure complications, administer pain management protocols, and provide attentive, compassionate care to patients who may be ill or in pain.
  • Create a Positive Client Experience: You'll discharge patients, review post-procedure treatment plans, home dental care, and follow-up instructions with clients, and support client service operations as needed.
  • Drive Operational Excellence and Mentorship: You'll accurately maintain medical records, prescriptions, and controlled drug logs using our computer systems, ensure procedure-room readiness between cases, and help train and mentor veterinary assistants and new teammates.
