Job description

Role Description

Scientist (JL 60) / Senior Scientist (JL 70) – Veterinary Flow Cytometry Scientist & Immunologist

The Zoetis Global Therapeutics for Livestock Health group, within Veterinary Medicine Research and Development, seeks to discover medicines (prophylactic, therapeutic, and biopharmaceutical) for veterinary applications. The team works across various therapeutic areas and focuses on understanding the immunological basis of chronic inflammation, infectious/non-infectious diseases, and host-pathogen interactions to identify and develop therapeutic targets for livestock (cattle, swine, poultry) and supporting companion animals (canine, feline, equine).

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Veterinary Flow Cytometry Scientist with a degree in Immunology, Cell Biology, Biotechnology, or a related field. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in multicolor flow cytometry, panel design, sample preparation, instrument operation, data analysis, assay development, and equipment standardization. The role involves contributing to research and development programs across various veterinary species, requiring expertise in multi-color flow cytometry, troubleshooting, data interpretation, and proficiency with flow cytometry software and instrumentation.

Responsibilities:
  1. Provide flow analysis support for in vitro and clinical samples across multiple species and therapeutic areas.
  2. Design and optimize multi-parameter flow cytometry panels for applications such as immunophenotyping, cell cycle analysis, apoptosis, and functional assays for livestock and companion animals.
  3. Analyze data using flow cytometry software (e.g., FlowJo, FCS Express, Cytobank) and prepare reports and presentations.
  4. Operate, calibrate, clean, and troubleshoot flow cytometers (e.g., BD, Beckman Coulter, Cytek) to ensure optimal performance.
  5. Develop and standardize protocols, maintain documentation, and ensure compliance with biosafety and regulatory standards.
  6. Stay updated on flow cytometry technological advancements, suggest new equipment, automation, and methodologies.
  7. Perform antibody conjugations and purifications as required.
  8. Collaborate with research teams, clinicians, and external partners; train staff in flow cytometry techniques.
  9. Support assay validation, including titration optimization and clone cross-reactivity confirmation.
  10. Maintain reagent inventories, including antibodies, buffers, conjugation kits, and consumables.
Education and Experience:

Minimum requirements include:

  • BSc. with 5+ years of relevant veterinary flow cytometry experience, or
  • Master’s degree with 5+ years of relevant experience, or
  • PhD with 0-2 years of experience in academia, biotech, or pharma.

Additional preferred skills include:

  • Hands-on experience with multi-color panels across species and gating strategies.
  • Proficiency with flow cytometers (e.g., Cytek Aurora, BD Canto) and analysis tools (FlowJo, Cytobank).
  • Knowledge of spectral flow, high-dimensional analysis, and acquisition software (Diva, Everest).
  • Skills in cell sorting, intracellular staining, ROS detection, apoptosis, and computational flow cytometry (t-SNE, UMAP, FlowSOM).
  • Strong immunology background, including innate and adaptive immune mechanisms.
  • Experience with cellular assay development and laboratory automation.
  • Excellent teamwork, independence, communication, and report writing skills.
  • Familiarity with Spectral Flow Cytometry is a plus.
Additional Information:
  • Work environment may involve exposure to animal pathogens and chemicals.
  • Position based in Kalamazoo, MI, with minimal travel.
