IndyVet Emergency and Specialty Hospital welcomes veterinary students to its externship program, offering exposure to emergency and specialty care alongside boarded specialists, clinicians, interns and residents.

Externs participate in daily case rounds, grand rounds, journal club, and lectures, with a lunch-presented case for 4+ week experiences. On-site housing is provided and a $250 weekly stipend supports externs during the program.

Responsabilités

• Participate in daily case rounds and attend grand rounds, journal club, and lectures.
• Work directly with clinicians in case management and hands-on learning.
• For externships of 4+ weeks, give a case presentation to IndyVet staff (often as a lunch presentation).
• Observe and assist in procedures such as exams, anesthesia, surgery, and diagnostic techniques when available.

IndyVet Veterinary Student Externship Program

IndyVet is a progressive specialty and emergency hospital that embraces a culture of mutual respect and teamwork while providing outstanding patient care and customer service.At IndyVet we put patient care first and believe in doing so through integrated clinical practice.Currently, we have specialists in critical care, surgery, internal medicine, oncology, and ophthalmology. We offer an externship program for all veterinary students.Most externship experiences at IndyVet Emergency and Specialty Hospital range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All Veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in Ethos externships, though preference may be given to students in their final two year(s) of veterinary school.

At IndyVet we are committed to lifelong learning.Our objective is to educate veterinary student externs by providing learning opportunities that will build upon the extern’s knowledge base and clinical skills.We are a busy emergency and specialty hospital with high case load.Boarded specialists, experienced emergency clinicians, and interns are all involved in teaching visiting students.Veterinary Students participate directly with our clinicians in case management.

Externship Orientation:

Once scheduled, student externs will receive an orientation packet including mentorship, expectations, and schedule.Externs are expected to attend daily case rounds, as well as any grand rounds, journal club, and lectures that occur during their time with us.Any extern that is scheduled for 4 or more weeks is also required to give a case presentation for IndyVet staff.This usually occurs as a lunch presentation.

On-site housing is available if needed.Accommodations are provided at no charge to our externs.

Stipend

Externs are allotted $250 each week of their externship to cover expenses.

Although every Ethos hospital is unique, we all have some things in common: an environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

An externship experience at an Ethos ER/Specialty Hospital gives students real-life clinical experience in a single or multi-specialty hospital, and the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills while working alongside experienced clinicians, board-certified specialists, current interns, and residents. Hands-on skills that may be practiced or observed include TPR’s, examinations, anesthesia, surgical procedures, catheterization, ultrasound, and other diagnostic procedures as they are available.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in Ethos externships, though preference may be given to students in their final year(s) of veterinary school.
