The Animal Clinic of La Porte offers externships for veterinary students seeking hands-on clinical experience in a supportive environment. Students will collaborate with experienced veterinarians, enhancing practical skills in a variety of clinical tasks and engaging with clients. The externship lasts from two to eight weeks, providing vital exposure to veterinary practices and operations.
Northpark Animal Hospital offers up to a $2500 travel stipend for 2025 clinical year externships.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, common features include a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations at Northpark Animal Hospital typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the stipend amounts and HERE for stipend program details.
