Job description

An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students the opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.

Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient care. Additionally, externs will have the chance to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. These externships are reserved for students in their clinical year.

Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
