Job description

Overview

The Animal Hospital of Waco offers up to a $2000 travel stipend for Clinical Year Externships.

The Animal Hospital of Waco is a three-doctor small animal practice that has proudly served the pets of Waco for over 60 years. Our clinic provides the ability to work with a diverse range of cases, including wellness visits, sick pets, and surgical procedures. We pride ourselves on being a supportive team that values collaboration, mentorship, and ongoing growth and development. Additionally, we are conveniently located just half a block from Magnolia Table!

Facilities & Team

We are a 4,000 square foot facility with 6 exam rooms. We are equipped with digital radiography, ultrasound, therapy laser, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), warming unit, in-house laboratory, Idexx referral lab, surgery suite with 2 heated surgical tables, anesthetic monitors, IV pumps, and a dental unit with drill.

Externship Details

An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all have some things in common: an environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

Students will work closely with the supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Duration & Eligibility

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Stipend amounts are listed by NVA and details on the stipend program are available through the organization.
