Job description

Externship Experience Overview

An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides veterinary students with the opportunity to understand daily operations, gain hands‑on clinical experience, and develop skills in animal care and client communication.

Responsibilities

• Gather patient histories and perform physical exams
• Create and implement treatment plans
• Conduct diagnostics, dentistry services, and observe or assist in surgical procedures
• Participate in medical management of patients
• Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients

Duration & Eligibility

Externship durations range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate. Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel and living expense stipend.

Stipend Information
