Job summary

Lake Street Animal Hospital welcomes veterinary externs to gain hands-on experience across dentistry, diagnostics, and general patient care. The hospital houses three full-time DVMs with extensive GP experience and AAHA accreditation for over 15 years, plus skilled CVTs and technicians with long tenure.

Externs will be mentored by a supervising veterinarian to learn histories, exams, treatment plans, and surgical observation or participation.

Responsibilities

• Gaining experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services.
• Observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures and medical management of patients.
• Practice communication skills with medical team, support staff, and clients.

Description & Requirements

Lake Street Animal Hospital will give externs hands-on experience with all levels of dentistry. We have 3 full-time DVM's with over 30 years combined GP experience. Lake Street has been AAHA accredited for over 15 years. We offer in-house diagnostics, ultrasound, digital x-ray, and laser therapy. We have highly skilled CVT's and technicians that have been with the hospital for over 10 years. The moment you walk into the hospital you become part of the LSAH family. Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.

Veterinary students who are in clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. The stipend amount forLake Street Animal Hospital is $1,500.
